In the 626, Packard combined luxury with performance by using a shorter wheelbase and body with a 320 CI inline 8-cylinder engine. The relatively affordable 626 would ultimately help Packard survive the Great Depression. This example is a CCCA Full Classic and has all the Packard hallmarks, from a solidly built body and chassis to the Goddess of Speed mascot, radiator stone guard, Pilot Ray driving lights, dual side-mount spares, luggage rack and trunk, rumble seat, cowl lamps, golf-bag compartment and even an electric fan mounted on the steering column for warmer days. In all regards, it’s equipped as a Packard would be expected.
But it’s also a nimble performer with semi-floating rear axle, front and rear semi-elliptical leaf springs and mechanically assisted drum brakes, all set on the aforementioned smaller chassis and body. Of course, a 3-speed manual transmission harnesses the power to the rear wheels and the steel wheels are color-matched to the body.
