This stately 1935 Rolls-Royce 20/25 is an elegant example of the best-selling Rolls-Royce model of the interwar period, the success of which allowed the company to endure the financial ravages of the Great Depression and remain at the top of the luxury motorcar hierarchy. Introduced in 1929, the 20/25 was aimed at the luxury-owner/driver market, but many featured the divider window common to limousine models, giving them a versatile dual-purpose nature. Its 3,669cc inline-6 engine was a development of that used in the preceding Model 20, its bore increased from 3 to 3.25 inches for an increase in power from 20 to 25.4 HP.
Rolls-Royce labored diligently to introduce running improvements to the 20/25 over the course of its production life, making later models the most fully realized of the 20/25 concept. Imported from England to the Hemstad family in 1973, this right-hand-drive 1935 20/25’s aluminum Mulliner coachwork is a pleasing combination of formal elegance and artful styling, its forms defined by contrasting two-tone burgundy and silver paint separated by a bright sculpted band at the beltline. Full-wheel discs and wide whitewall tires enhance the car’s flowing lines, and a single spare is mounted on the driver’s side in a painted metal case.
The Spirit of Ecstasy presides over the large articulated Lucas headlamps, center driving light and dual horns that form the car’s iconic visage; at the rear, the luggage compartment also contains a hardwood shelf for tire-change tools and a lubrication pump. The spacious burgundy leather interior indulges occupants with luxury and convenience, offering beautiful two-tone veneer accents and finely crafted upholstery and carpets. A compartment built into the front seatback and containing decanters and glasses is flanked by fold-down passenger footrests.
Comfortable seating, burled-wood finishes, steering-wheel-mounted throttle and ride controls, and a full set of in-dash gauges evoke a classic driving experience that is exclusive to the Rolls-Royce brand. This 1935 Rolls-Royce 20/25 is accompanied with a copy of the June 29, 1935, bill of sale, owner’s handbook, partial tool kit, maintenance records, restoration pictures and historical records from previous owners.
