Knowing an affordable and powerful tractor was critical for Italian farmers to begin to improve agricultural productivity—an essential step in rebuilding postwar Italy—Ferruccio Lamborhing put his expertise gained during the war to good use. Ferruccio created a chassis and modified the engine and feeding systems, and in 1948, he unveiled his “Carioca” tractors—a low-cost tractor in comparison to its Italian competition and one that he could sell worldwide. With his reputation among the farming industry quickly growing, Ferruccio built a true production plant and, in 1948, founded Lamborghini Trattori S.p.A. in Cento, Italy.
The success ultimately allowed Ferruccio to secure a loan to expand his business, purchase 1,000 Morris 3.5L 6-cylinder gas engines, hire more workers and begin manufacturing the L33 tractor. His tractors were innovative, featuring items like a fuel atomizer of Ferruccio’s own design that allowed a diesel engine to be started with gasoline and then switched over to run on less expensive diesel fuel. Innovations like these made Lamborghini Trattori competitive in the tractor market, and progressively growing sales meant a fully Lamborghini-built tractor would soon follow.
This 1971 Lamborghini 1R 230 received a comprehensive, frame-off restoration in Italy before being imported into the United States. It’s finished in the traditional colors of blue mechanicals with an orange cowl, seat, fenders and wheels, and the “1R” and “Lamborghini” graphics adorn the cowl, twin headlights flank the nose, tail lights are at the rear and an instrument cluster is settled below the three-spoke steering wheel. It’s powered by a 1.5L twin-cylinder diesel engine. The 1R 230 line of Lamborghini tractors is lightly based on the Lamborghinetta, which was launched in 1958 with a 2-cylinder, 22 HP Lamborghini engine.
