As the heavily updated 964-Generation 911 model line was set to be retired from production in December 1993, Porsche marked the occasion with its third iteration of the Speedster to the delight of Porsche fans everywhere. In contrast to the 1989 Speedster, a primarily cosmetic package evoking the 356 Speedsters of the 1950s, the 964-based Speedster upped the performance ante considerably, being based upon the potent Carrera 2. With its shortened and raked removable windshield, lightweight yet Porsche-worthy interior of the 911 RS and hard “double bubble” rear tonneau cover, the 964 Speedster certainly maintained the model’s youthful, adventurous character.
Sharing its 3.6L M64/01 “flat-6” powerplant with the Carrera 2, the 964 Speedster delivered 250 HP at 6,100 RPM, a considerable bump over the output of the prior 3.2L 911 powerplant. Porsche had initially envisioned production of the 964 Speedster would reach 3,000 examples, but only 936 were ultimately built. All were narrow-bodied, and the model never gained a full “wide body” option like the previous generation, with the exception of about 20 ordered with “Turbo-Look” bodies built through the Porsche Exclusive program. Offered with just 6,720 miles showing on the odometer, this 1994 Porsche 911 Speedster is one of only 469 examples produced for the U.S. market.
The renowned 3.6L flat 6-cylinder engine is backed by a 5-speed manual transmission for a decidedly sporting driving experience in concert with power steering and stopping via 4-wheel disc brakes. Finished in Guards Red with black leather upholstery and a black soft top, the Speedster is equipped with lightweight RS door panels and comfort and convenience amenities like automatic speed control, air conditioning and power windows. An iconic set of 5-spoke alloy wheels completes the Speedster’s unmistakable visuals, and a roadside jack and spare are present underneath the front bonnet.
