The original, competitively priced Porsche 356 Speedster of the 1950s became an instant threat in production sports car racing; light, agile, and possessing ample power for its day, the little "bathtub" was a symbol of what a real sports car should be.
Porsche revived the Speedster name in 1989, building a limited number of 911 Carrera 3.2 Cabriolet-based versions with a cut-down windshield, a simple cloth "emergency" manual top that could be stowed beneath a plastic twin-hump tonneau cover. The occasional rear jump seats were eliminated and the space dedicated to extra storage. The latter-day Speedster was really meant for top-down fair-weather motoring and was rarely seen with the top up. The Speedster presented a very sleek, high-performance look. Most buyers were image-conscious and preferred to equip their cars with luxury and comfort items.
The Speedster name was again revived for the 1994 model year as a Cabriolet option built on the restyled and modernized Type 964 that was introduced in 1991. The 964 series was notable for its flush front and rear bumpers and improved aerodynamics. The engine cover included a new electric rear spoiler that rose at speeds above 50 mph and retracted at lower speeds. ABS and power-assisted steering were standard equipment, and the front suspension had coil springs and struts replacing the old torsion bar design of earlier 911s. Fewer than a thousand 964 Speedsters were constructed, with 469 examples earmarked for North American distribution; of those, 20 are known to have been completed with the menacing wide-bodied M491 "Turbo-look" bodywork from Porsche Exclusive.
Eye-catching in Paint-to-Sample Ferrari Yellow (10L) with a full black leather interior and black cloth top, this "Narrow-body" Speedster is the 325th in that series. It left the factory with an entertainment system, 40 percent limited-slip differential, air conditioning, painted wheel center caps, a pair of deep Recaro sport seats, headlamp washers, and painted wheel centers. Its 3.6-liter engine produced 247 bhp and fed a smooth-shifting five-speed manual transaxle. The car was capable of a factory-claimed top speed of 163 miles per hour.
Now showing just 21,722 original miles, this Speedster was acquired by the current owner, a prominent Porsche collector. It has been properly maintained in all respects and driven on a regular basis to ensure that it is in proper working order. Recently serviced by a trained Porsche technician, it is supplied with its correct tool roll, electric inflator, manuals, and period sales materials.
For head-turning, fair-weather driving around Amelia Island, there could be nothing better than a Ferrari Yellow Porsche Speedster.
