When Porsche famously transitioned to water-cooled engines in 1997 with the 996 series, the preceding 993 generation became, by default, the last of the manufacturer’s celebrated air-cooled 911s. In the opinion of many marque enthusiasts, the 993 was the peak of Porsche’s seminal design, as the model achieved specifications and dimensions—not to mention distinctive performance—that are still cherished today.
Among the fervent niche of 911 purists, several firms have emerged that celebrate the timeless nature of the 993 by rebuilding the cars into a higher state of development, both mechanically and aesthetically. Among these boutique firms, Gunther Werks of Huntington Beach, California, is particularly notable. The company offers four different build plans, three of which are directly based on stalwart 993 iterations: the Turbo, the Speedster, and the rear-wheel-drive Carrera. Each of these programs is limited in build numbers, and each car is distinctively tailored to yield a one-of-a-kind product—the ultimate 993, a 911 Remastered by Gunther (as their legal understanding with Porsche is termed).
In the case of the Carrera program, donor cars are disassembled and refitted with an awe-inspiring amount of carbon fiber, which Gunther Werks has superbly woven into the chassis. Numerous exterior body panels and internal components have been swapped for the lightweight composite. Underpinning this carbon-fiber exoskeleton, Gunther Werks has developed a formidable suspension setup which combines JRZ adjustable coil-overs with remote reservoirs, custom rear control arms, uprated anti-rollbars, lightweight uprights, and a front strut brace.
For power, Porsche’s standard 3.6-liter flat six-cylinder engine is entrusted to Rothsport Road and Race in Sherwood, Oregon, where it is stripped down and enlarged to 4.0 liters of displacement. The Remastered engine features an extensive list of forged internals and race-spec equipment, including two-stage MoTec engine management, individual throttle bodies, and a custom intake design based on the intake plenum of a 996-series Porsche 911 GT3.
The happy result of these sweeping upgrades is a significant boost in power, as the Rothsport engine develops 435 horsepower while generating 312 pound-feet of torque. Transferring all that might to the road is the 993’s standard Getrag G50 six-speed transaxle, which has been extensively enhanced with stronger internals, a lightened flywheel, and a clutch sourced from a 997.2 GT3 RS. The payoff of Gunther Werks’ efforts became evident in 2020 when professional racing driver Randy Pobst piloted an example to a lap time of 1:30.99 around Weathertech Raceway in Laguna Seca, California—only about two-tenths of a second behind a McLaren P1.
Of course, the Remastered interiors are no less extravagant, with two-toned perforated leather combinations accented with anodized aluminum or carbon fiber, all executed to the customer’s individual order. According to Gunther Werks, 80 percent of the Remastered 911’s interior is bespoke, while the remaining 20 percent is replaced with brand-new Porsche equipment.
Only 25 examples of the Remastered Carrera Coupe were built, giving each of the special cars instantaneous rarity and corresponding collectability. Each example has been individually named for its commission, which is embossed on the door sill along with script reading “Limited to 1 of 25,” a permanent record of the car’s unique identity.
This Remastered 911 is dubbed the “Rennsport Aventura” commission, and it is reported to be the final car of the 25 examples built. A build sheet on file shows that the commission cost $778,888 before delivery fees, including $208,888 for upgraded equipment. In commemoration of the Carrera-based boutique model, the striking car was displayed by Gunther Werks at The Quail: A Motorsports Gathering in 2022, where it debuted to overwhelming acclaim.
Since then, the original owner has kept the 911 fastidiously garaged and maintained in showroom condition. Showing signs of little to no use, this magnificent Gunther currently displays “delivery mileage.” 993 Carrera enthusiasts in search of the ultimate expression of Porsche’s celebrated design could hardly find a more thoughtful and beautifully executed tribute than this exactingly built boutique 911 Remastered by Gunther Werks, which is ready for immediate display or driving enjoyment.
