The Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith first appeared in 1938-39, but World War II saw the company shift into wartime production with its V-12 Merlin engines powering Supermarine Spitfire and North American Mustang fighters in Packard-built V-1650 trim. The Silver Wraith emerged victorious from the Merlin engine plant in 1946, and this right-hand-drive 1948 Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith is one of just 1,783 hand-built from 1946-59. This Silver Wraith is the product of a comprehensive restoration in 2014 at the hands of Nevada-based Silver State Industries automotive-restoration program, which returned the limousine to its unmatched combination of performance and luxury.
Behind the signature upright grille and Spirit of Ecstasy hood ornament is a 4.3L inline 6-cylinder engine backed by a 4-speed manual transmission. With a Stromberg carburetor and solid-lifter-actuated overhead intake and side exhaust F-head valvetrain, the famously balanced engine was good for 125 HP at a civilized 3,750 RPM. The postwar Silver Wraith featured a redesigned chassis and suspension with front coil and semi-elliptic rear springs working with adjustable hydraulic damping for the expected ride. Steel disc wheels superseded prewar wire-spoked versions and were backed by a servo-assisted front and mechanically operated rear drum-braking system.
Classic prewar Rolls-Royce design with externally-mounted Lucas triple-headlamp configuration continued with the postwar Silver Wraith. The coachbuilt body on the 127-inch wheelbase chassis was straightened and painted into a traditional black-over-maroon two-tone color scheme. The interior was upholstered in maroon hide with matching carpeting. Refinished wood trim frames the occupants and Smiths instrumentation in handcrafted opulence. The Silver Wraith was a favorite of presidents and potentates alike, and as such, it comes with a limousine division window for compartmentalizing the rear cabin, which features folding jump seats for executive-party appointments.
