When the four-seat Lamborghini Espada appeared in 1968, the trend for offering 2+2 coupé versions was already well established among manufacturers of powerful GTs. Inspired by the Marzal, the Espada was a true four-seater designed at Bertone by Marcello Gandini, like the Miura, and equipped with the powerful, in-house four-litre V12 producing 325 hp. Compared with the contemporary Ferrari 365 2+2, the Espada was paradoxically more sporting, despite its generous width and length, which were disguised by the harmonious proportions and low height.
For 1970, the Espada received new brakes and an extra 25 hp, as well as a less futuristic dashboard and a considerably better-finished interior. Having reached maturity, the Espada sold 228 units in 1970 and 198 in 1971. The Series 3, introduced in late 1972, revived sales, with 187 examples sold in 1973. The suspension was modified and two alternators were fitted, but above all, the Espada gained power steering, making parking easier, and the dashboard was revised. Faster than a Ferrari 400 at the time, it produced 350 hp and was also a more exclusive car.
With 1,217 units in total, the Espada thus became Lamborghini's best-selling model in terms of production between 1968 and 1978. Our example covered just 1,300 km in ten years and was maintained and stored in a dry place. The head gaskets were replaced by Roger Salvatore in 2006, and the bodywork and paint were redone by the Dessaigne workshop in Dordives in 2005. The tan leather seats and headliner are original and in good condition, but the wool carpets have been replaced. It is equipped with air conditioning and a battery isolator.
