Heralding from the 1980s heyday for homologation specials, Renault thoroughly reworked its pretty and popular 5 hatchback to create the Turbo—a challenger to Lancia’s Stratos and the Audi quattro on the stages of the World Rally Championship. Complying with the Group 4 rulebook, the front-wheel-drive powertrain was abandoned in favour of a rear-drive setup while the back seats had to make way for a mid-mounted, turbocharged 1.4-litre engine.
Built between 1983 and 1986, the revised Turbo 2 model traded aluminium body panels for steel. Approximately 3,200 road-going examples were built. According to Renault factory records, the car offered here was finished in White Pearl and specified with tinted glass and electric windows before leaving the factory on 30 January 1984.
Thereafter, this Turbo 2 spent most of its life in Japan, having moved to the central region of Gunma in October 1988. The car remained in the country through to July 2021 before being exported to the United Kingdom, with it now consigned to auction by its current German owner.
A l'apogée de l'ère des homologations spécifiques, dans les années 1980, Renault retravailla en profondeur sa mignonne et si populaire R5 à hayon pour créer la Turbo, une concurrente des Lancia Stratos et Audi Quattro destinée à disputer le Championnat du monde des rallyes. En accord avec le règlement du Groupe 4, il fallut remplacer l'architecture à traction avant par une autre à propulsion arrière, pour laquelle la banquette arrière céda la place à un moteur turbo de 1,4 litre monté en position centrale.
Son évolution, la Turbo 2 construite entre 1983 et 1986, avait remplacé l'aluminium de ses panneaux de carrosserie par de l'acier. Il y en eut environ 3 200 exemplaires construits en version tourisme. Selon les archives de Renault, la voiture proposée sortit d'usine le 30 janvier 1984, de couleur blanc perle, avec des glaces teintées et des vitres électriques.
Ensuite, cette Turbo 2 passa l'essentiel de sa vie au Japon, après avoir rejoint la région centrale de Gunma en octobre 1988. Elle resta dans le pays jusqu'en juillet 2021 puis fut exportée au Royaume-Uni ; elle est maintenant proposée à la vente par son actuel propriétaire, un Allemand.
