From the company’s founding at the turn of the 20th century through the Roaring Twenties and well into the Great Depression, the Packard name was among the most revered in both the automobile business and popular culture. Packard’s popular advertising slogan, “Ask the Man who Owns One,” created the aura behind the car’s mystique and has been recognized as one of the great selling lines of all time. Packard had a record year for sales in 1928, selling 50,000 units, with loyal repeat customers seeking to maintain the great prestige that came with owning a Packard.

Packard remained the national standard through most of the 1930s with more coach-built specials than any other American manufacturer, but the Crash of 1929 and targeted competition from GM’s Cadillac division had already triggered a change in the company’s fortunes. The development of the Light Eight and One Twenty allowed more buyers than ever before the ability to own a Packard. The successful One Twenty, Packard’s first sub-$1,000 car, led to the more compact Packard Six introduced in 1937.

A state-of-the-art piece of engineering worthy of the Packard name, the Packard Six featured all-steel coachwork, Safe-T-Flex independent front suspension and a 237/100 HP inline-6 derived from the One Twenty’s 8-cylinder engine. “The Most Famous Radiator Contour in the World” remained, and the Junior Six was an elegant automobile, as demonstrated by this exquisite 1938 Model 1189 Packard Six convertible coupe. Restored in frame-off fashion and maintained in a climate-controlled garage since, it presents in Packard Dark Green with a tan leather interior and a correct canvas top. The chrome and rubber gaskets have been either replaced or restored.

The inline-6 flathead engine, increased to 245 CI for 1938, is matched to a Selective Shift synchromesh 3-speed transmission. Fitted with fog lights, wind wings, Duolite glass, 16-inch steel wheels with chrome trim rings and wheel covers wrapped in bias-ply 6.50 wide whitewall tires, the proverbial icing on the cake is the correct 1938-style swan hood mascot with an accessory radio antenna.
