The Ferrari F40 endures as a symbol of Enzo Ferrari’s lifelong passion for combining speed and beauty in an automobile of his making. Indeed, the F40 was the last car conceived and approved by Ferrari before his passing in 1988, a fitting dénouement to a lifetime spent pursuing undistilled performance.

Directly descended from the fabulous 288 GTO, the F40 was powered by the most sophisticated road-purposed V-8 engine in the company’s history—a compact, longitudinally-mounted all-alloy 2.9L unit bristling with 32 valves, Weber-Marelli electronic fuel injection, and twin Behr-intercooled IHI turbochargers developing 471 HP at 7,000 RPM and 426 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 RPM through a 5-speed manual gearbox.

While incorporating such technical highlights as carbon fiber, Nomex and Kevlar body construction over a lightweight steel tube frame, enormous cross-drilled and ventilated Brembo disc brakes, and a high-downforce-inducing undertray, the F40, in stark contrast to Porsche’s high-tech 959, eschewed such amenities as power steering, ABS, traction control, interior door panels, door handles or carpeting, windup windows or a radio. Air conditioning was available—the lone concession to luxury.

Driver accommodations were the purest and most focused of any roadgoing Ferrari since the revered 250 GTO: a choice of fitted seats of three different sizes; a padded small-diameter steering wheel fronting a tightly-packaged, hooded instrument cluster; drilled aluminum pedals; and that lovely signature gated shifter. Black flocking on the smoothed dash and shifter tunnel minimized glare.

Barely removed from an out-and-out race car, the F40 fulfilled its mission of reestablishing Ferrari’s supremacy in the upper echelon of performance road cars—a machine Enzo himself proudly described as “a very special Ferrari, for very special customers.” Serial number 087568, this 1991 Ferrari F40 was delivered new on February 25, 1991, to Classic Ferrari, Inc., in Richardson, Texas. It is one of 1,315 produced in total and one of just 213 U.S.-specification examples, and one of very few retrofitted by an expert Ferrari technician with the ultra-rare European-market variable height suspension system.

Sparingly driven and meticulously maintained, it shows an odometer reading of a scant 1,773 miles at the time of writing, its Rosso Corsa exterior finish and Rosso Stoffa Vigogna interior preserved in keeping with the overall immaculate condition that earned the FCA Platinum Award at the January 2000 Cavallino Classic in Palm Beach, Florida. This amazing tribute to Ferrari’s genius is accompanied by an owner’s manual, tools and compressed air bottle, and carries with it the essential Ferrari Classiche certification and Red Book.
