Porsche USA had planned a single marque racing series—the 1992 Carrera Cup USA—in homage to both the 1973/74 International Race of Champions and the European Carrera Cup Series. In anticipation of this series, Porsche built 45 identical 1992 Carrera Cup 911 Coupes specifically earmarked for racing participation. However, because of strict American vehicle importation laws, the Carrera Cup cars had to be street legal. The 45 cars had significant changes that involved strength reinforcement achieved through seam welding the unit-body chassis. A 200-pound weight savings was realized with thinner glass and the deletion of the radio, air conditioning, power steering and sound proofing.
The plan was to further convert these cars to full race specification once they arrived in the United States. Out of the 45 cars, 29 were shipped to Andial Racing for racing modification. This 1992 Porsche 911 Carrera Cup is one of just four units that were set aside and never converted to full race specification with its ultimate destination being Brumos Racing as a tub car. With only 841 miles, this Grand Prix White example is a pristine “benchmark” of authenticity validated with a special dash plaque bearing its serial number.
All 45 Carrera Cup cars came equipped with the M64/03 engine, lightweight flywheel, G50/10 5-speed manual transmission, limited-slip differential, disc brakes with vented rotors, power windows and power door locks. The four units that were never converted were originally intended as backup units should the need arise, a lesson learned in the 1973 IROC series when three extra Porsche RSR race cars were held on reserve. Because of financial reasons, the 1992 Carrera Cup racing series was ultimately canceled, and in a twist of irony, the 25 fully converted race cars were either disassembled and put back to their original street-legal specification or sold as competition cars.
