Fifty years passed between the last Mercedes-Benz to carry the SLR name and the 21st century SLR McLaren. While evoking such legends as Juan Manuel Fangio and Stirling Moss, this 2006 Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren also embodies the Formula 1 expertise and technology of today’s era. One of just 2,114 built, it makes extensive use of modern carbon fiber engineering techniques, resulting in low weight, extremely high torsional stiffness, occupant safety and outstanding ride characteristics.

Its butterfly wing doors, chromed stainless steel side exhaust and air brake rear spoiler recall the mid-Fifties Silver Arrows, but beneath the surface is a wealth of Formula 1-inspired technology headlined by its hand-built supercharged and intercooled 5.4 liter V-8 engine, which barks to life by exposing and pushing the start button hidden in the handle of the console mounted shifter. Factory rated at 617 HP, the SOHC, 3-valve-per-cylinder engine works in concert with an electronically controlled AMG Speedshift five-speed automatic transmission and limited slip differential. Remote coolers maintain proper engine and transmission oil temperatures.

The suspension also follows F1 design practice, incorporating double wishbones and coil springs all around, a front anti-roll bar and rack and pinion steering. Computerized traction control exerts its influence on the drivetrain and the suspension, the latter with stability control and 4-corner automatic levelling. Behind the 19-inch forged chrome vented wheels and Michelin Pilot Sport tires, Sensotronic-controlled disc brakes with ABS haul the SLR down with excellent control and feedback.

Carefully maintained through its 21,336 miles, this 2006 SLR coupe pays tribute to Mercedes-Benz’s heritage with its combination of Crystal Laurit Silver paint and contrasting Red leather interior with carbon fiber sport seats and Alcantara suede headliner. Exclusive standard equipment includes fully leather-upholstered carbon fiber sport seats and Alcantara headliner, dual-zone automatic air-conditioning, a high-quality Bose premium sound system, multifunction steering wheel with gear-change paddles and navigation system.
