Throughout its storied history, Porsche has blessed the motoring world with a succession of homologation specials engineered and built to meet international competition requirements while remaining perfectly legal for road use. The stunning Carrera GT was the planned successor to the mighty 911 GT1 race car of the 1990s, with development commencing in 1999. While FIA rule changes frustrated its endurance-racing plans for the new car, Porsche forged ahead, and when production ended in May 2006 some 1,270 of the highly anticipated cars were built at Porsche’s new facility in Leipzig, Germany. Of those, 604 were destined for America’s hungry supercar market.
Powered by a midmounted 5.7L V-10 engine factory-rated at 605 HP, the Carrera GT was, and remains, a ferocious performer. Acceleration from rest to 60 MPH is achieved in just 3.8 seconds with the 100 MPH mark shattered in less than 7.0 seconds en route to a 205 MPH top-end charge. While never intended for the dragstrip, the Carrera GT also delivers wicked 11.4-second elapsed times over the quarter mile. Offered with the odometer reading 7,589 miles, this 2004 Porsche Carrera GT is one of 1,270 examples produced over a three-year period. One of just 41 produced in Basalt Black for the North American Market, this Carrera GT also includes removable carbon fiber roof panels.
The race-derived 5.7L/605 HP V-10 engine is paired with a 6-speed manual gearbox that is controlled with a simple yet elegant and lightweight birch/ash wood gearshift knob that silently pays homage to the Le Mans-conquering Porsche 917. A Porsche ceramic composite clutch delivers the power to the rear gearbox transaxle, and the Porsche ceramic composite brake system’s yellow brake calipers are tucked behind five-spoke magnesium wheels with Porsche crest center caps and Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires. The Dark Grey leather interior includes XT bucket seats, a galvanized magnesium center console, air conditioning and a Porsche Online Pro AM/FM/CD stereo system.
The racing-style reinforced cockpit safety design incorporates a carbon fiber and aluminum monocoque and subframe. Other highlights include carbon reinforced plastic engine and transmission mounts, Xenon headlamps, under-floor ground effects with a rear diffuser, an electronically activated rear wing and competition-type pushrod-actuated inboard suspension. Documents include a German dealer binder, German language specifications, MOT test certificates, insurance information, an owner’s manual and service records.
