Since inception in 1948, Porsche has produced a wide array of homologation specials specifically engineered to meet international competition requirements while remaining—often theoretically—legal for road use. Planned as the successor to the GT1 of the late 1990s, the stunning Carrera GT entered development by Porsche’s Motorsports Division in 1999, but FIA rule changes frustrated its planned endurance-racing use. Nonetheless, Porsche forged ahead with the Carrera GT, repositioned as an elite road model. When production ended in May 2006, only some 1,270 examples were built in all at the new Porsche facility in Leipzig, Germany.
Of them, just 604 were destined for America’s supercar market, including this example offered in highly original condition with the odometer reading 4,258 miles. A legendary performer with a factory-rated top speed of 205 MPH, this 2004 Porsche Carrera GT is motivated by a 5.7L/605 HP V-10 engine and 6-speed manual transmission, with power delivery via a Porsche ceramic composite clutch.
Visually stunning in its Seal Gray exterior finish with protective paint film protection, the Carrera GT’s many highlights include carbon fiber removable roof panels, its carbon fiber and aluminum monocoque subframe, a racing-style reinforced cockpit safety design, and carbon reinforced plastic engine and transmission mounts. Other technical innovations include pushrod-activated inboard suspension, Porsche ceramic composite brakes, five-spoke Magnesium wheels, a wicked-sounding two-chamber stainless exhaust system and Xenon headlamps.
Additional features and amenities include one-touch power windows, tire pressure monitoring, a telescopic steering wheel, cruise control and powered and heated mirrors. Accompanying this legendary Porsche supercar are two sets of keys, a car cover, a luggage set and original books.
