Gunther Werks focuses on obsessively “remastering” the type-993 911—last generation of the air-cooled Porsches—with fully bespoke carbon fiber bodywork, custom-engineered chassis components, and highly tuned, flat-six engines, all of which combine to provide a soulful, analog driving experience in stark contrast to today’s electronics-laden supercars. The Huntington Beach, California-based company launched in 2017 with a “remastered” coupe, of which only 25 were built. A speedster followed in 2020, offering an even more focused and unfiltered driving experience than the coupe. Also limited to just 25 examples, all have been allocated, making the example offered here an incredible find.
The speedster’s remastering process begins with a 993-generation 911 Carrera Cabriolet stripped down to bare metal and the chassis fully restored before being reinforced with carbon fiber components, including additional structural bracing in the space previously occupied by the rear seats. A carbon fiber windshield frame and cowl with aluminum reinforcements, along with a roll cage and roll hoop—integrated as support for the tonneau cover—combine with other reinforcement measures to create what Gunther Werks claims is a convertible chassis twice as stiff as the standard coupe with no added weight penalty.
Underpinning the carbon fiber exoskeleton is a proprietary chassis setup with a bespoke damper system, custom suspension arms with revised geometry, uprated anti-roll bars, lightweight uprights, a front strut brace, and a hydraulic front lift system to help with speed bumps and driveway ramps.
The original 3.6-liter naturally aspirated flat six-cylinder engine was shipped to Rothsport Racing in Sherwood, Oregon, where it was disassembled and rebuilt to 4.0 liters of displacement with an extensive list of forged internals and race-spec components. Claimed output is more than 430 horsepower and 330 pound-feet of torque, managed through a Getrag G50 six-speed manual transaxle beefed up with stronger internals, a single-mass mid-weight flywheel, and an uprated single-plate clutch.
Known as the "Buenos Aires Commission," this Gunther Werks Speedster completed production in July 2023. It is finished in black with dark bronze center-locking wheels, Black Edition headlights, LED taillights, and nickel-finished accents—a timeless color scheme sure to hold its appeal with collectors and enthusiasts indefinitely. The cabin blends classic 911 elements with obsessive Gunther Werks craftsmanship, including black leather carbon fiber shell seats, five-piece carbon fiber floor paneling, and countless bespoke details, including three-way adjustable dampers from JRZ Suspension Engineering, custom gear ratios, and black-finished aerodynamic door handles.
The car showed just 13 miles at cataloguing time, offering an exceedingly rare opportunity to acquire a virtually new, fully bespoke, open-top, air-cooled masterpiece no longer in production.
