Penned by Filippo Sapino of Pininfarina, the Ferrari 365 GTC/4’s flowing wedge shape with pop-up headlights was a significant departure from the more traditional profile of its predecessors when it debuted at the 1971 Geneva Motor Show. Though proportioned like a two-seater coupe, clever interior packaging allowed for two fold-down rear seats best suited for luggage or children. Thus, the new GTC/4 effectively replaced two models, the 365 GTC and 365 GT 2+2.
Both in design and performance, the new 365 GTC/4 was more subdued than the aggressive 365 GTB/4, its two-seater contemporary whose chassis it shared. The high-revving 4.4-liter V-12 engine—the “4” in GTC/4 designating quad overhead camshafts—was slightly detuned and less high-strung by comparison, making it torquier and more tractable at lower speeds. The suspension was also softer than that of the GTB/4, while creature comforts like power steering, power windows, and air conditioning came standard. With a production run of less than two years, Ferrari produced only 500 examples of the 365 GTC/4, the bulk of which were sold in the United States. US-specification cars are visually distinguished by their rectangular side-markers and chromed, center-lock wheel nuts.
The US-spec example offered here completed production in December 1971 and was delivered in January 1972 to official importer Luigi Chinetti Motors in New York, finished in Nero over Nero Cogolo full leather seats with red carpets. It was sold new to Dr. Robert H. Bailey of Augusta, Georgia and remained in Georgia with only one other owner until 2011, making multiple appearances at Ferrari Club of America events in Atlanta during the early 2000s. In November 2011, Walter Medlin acquired the 365 GTC/4 from Ferrari of Atlanta, which advertised the car as having a recent repaint in black and a redone interior by the famous specialists Luppi in Italy, also in the original black. Mileage was listed at 36,546 miles.
With the odometer showing 36,556 miles as of cataloguing time, Medlin appears to have driven this 365 GTC/4 quite minimally before storing it with the rest of his Ferrari collection, which only recently has come to light. Offered now from the Lost & Found Collection, it will require some recommissioning after its long hibernation. Yet this 365 GTC/4 appears quite intact, retaining its numbers-matching engine and rear axle, and is a stellar find for any Ferrari collector—an excellent candidate to be restored and fully appreciated on the road or concours green.
