Already renowned as one of America’s finest luxury car manufacturers, Packard was a world leader in the development and perfection of large displacement 12-cylinder engines for automotive and aviation applications. In particular, Packard was positioned to lead the luxury car market in direct competition with Cadillac during the 1930s with its new V-12 Twin Six, named after its first 12-cylinder lines of 1916-1923. Initially displacing 445.5 CI, Packard’s new Twin Six was renamed “Packard Twelve” by 1933; two years later, displacement rose to 473 CI with output also rising from 160 to 175 HP—both figures reached at 3,200 RPM.

Overall, the Packard Twelve was based upon a conservatively and durably engineered chassis with finely tailored basic styling cues and a wide array of elegant and luxurious open and closed body styles. Packard built just 311 Twin Six cars on the Series 905 142-inch wheelbase chassis for the 1932 model year, including this dashing Twin Six Coupe Roadster. Per the Packard Club, only a handful of these Twin Six Coupe Roadsters exist today. According to known history, it was purchased in the 1960s by Don Miller of Ludington, Michigan, who performed a cosmetic restoration and kept the car for more than 50 years.

About 10 years ago, Joe Crea of Cleveland, Ohio, acquired the car from Miller and commissioned Straight Eight in Troy, Michigan, to perform selective cosmetic work, which was followed by entries in concours d’elegance and touring events. Recently acquired by a private collector, this Twin Six Coupe Roadster exudes a sporting yet elegant presence with its burgundy and black two-tone exterior finish, tan leather interior and adventurous open body featuring Packard’s signature chrome radiator grille, bumpers and trim.

The legendary 445.5 CI L-head V-12 engine is equipped with a Stromberg carburetor and delivers 160 HP via a synchromesh 3-speed manual transmission, and the driving experience is enhanced by Packard’s advanced Ride Control and 4-wheel mechanical brakes. In addition to Packard’s signature Goddess of Speed radiator mascot, this Twin Six also features dual side-mounted spare wheels and tires, dual horns and wipers, cowl lamps, a golf club compartment and a clock and instruments by Waltham. Exceedingly rare and benefiting abundantly from collector care, this unforgettable Packard Twin Six is a true Jazz Age legend.
