When a silver-painted Rolls-Royce 40/50 HP ran for 2,000 miles in the 1907 Scottish Reliability Trials and then went on to cover 15,000 miles, driving from London to Glasgow 27 times, it not only set an astonishing reliability record but established the brand’s values as well. Soon after, in 1908, the fledgling company dropped other models to concentrate all its efforts on the 40/50, or Silver Ghost, as it became known.
The British magazine “The Autocar” reported with a note of awe that the 40/50 “might be a silent sewing machine (offering) no realisation of driving propulsion; the feeling as the passenger sits either at the front or the back of the vehicle is one of being wafted through the landscape.” Others simply hailed the Silver Ghost the “best car in the world.” A further consequence of the one-model policy was that all of Rolls-Royce’s engineering brilliance was focused on evolutionary development of the car over 20 years. The engine soon grew to 7428cc, power was further increased, and then came electric starting and electric lighting, to name but a few.
However, as a late model, this 1924 Pall Mall Tourer not only benefits from those developments, but offers even more. When Rolls-Royce set up its Springfield plant in 1920, the American Rolls-Royces soon started to adopt American-produced accessories and electrical equipment. For many enthusiasts, they are regarded even more highly than the British versions, not least for their less ponderous bodies. The wire wheels and drum headlamps on this Pall Mall Tourer are a hallmark of the Springfield Rolls-Royces. So too, is the body. Rolls-Royce Custom Coachworks produced just 179 of these open Pall Mall tourers. This example is all the more select for retaining its original coachwork.
Both then and now, the five-seater Pall Mall Tourer is considered the Silver Ghost of choice for touring drivers, and to this end, this elegant vehicle is all the more suited with the much-favored later 4-speed transmission.
