Launched in 1929, the 20/25 followed the established 'small' Rolls-Royce practice in that it was conceived and built to the same exacting standards as its larger Phantom II stable mate. Developed more or less side-by-side the two models shared improvements introduced during their respective lifetimes including thermostatically controlled radiator shutters and pedal operated chassis lubrication. Although based around the same leaf-sprung, drum braked chassis design as its 20hp predecessor, the 20/25 enjoyed notably sharper acceleration, a higher top speed and better fuel economy thanks to its enlarged 3669cc, straight-six OHV engine. Available with synchromesh on third and fourth gear from 1932 onwards, the 20/25 quickly drew praise from the contemporary press.
Autocar noted that it had "great refinement of power, and a gentleness and quietness in doing its work, which makes results deceptive". Unlike its 25/30 successor, the 20/25 remained true to founder Henry Royce's perfectionist principles and his abhorrence of bought-in components.
We are informed by the vendor that this particular Rolls Royce Sedanca De Ville was subject to a major overhaul in 2002, work included a bare metal re-spray, overhaul of the wiring system and interior re-trim. All work has been carried out by the vendor as has any further work that has been required, in more recent years, to keep this beautiful old car in such superb fettle. The Rolls fires on first spin and the 6 cylinder engine settles down to a whisper at tick over. The gearbox is both smooth and precise and you are quickly underway with very little effort.
The paintwork is by no means perfect but this rather adds a superb patina to the overall appearance of the car. The vendor informs us that the car is structurally very sound and has been very well cared for over the years. It comes with a current MOT and Road Fund Licence until June of 2013.
This Rolls is a delight to drive and behind the wheel the car really does shrink around you. Sinking into the well stuffed rear seat you soon appreciate the surroundings and the fact that you're in a very special old motorcar.With the vintage looks and oodles of period charm it looks fantastic and drives beautifully, certainly offering English pre WW2 style along with the finest engineering, all for the price of a modern family saloon car.
