In 1922, Rolls-Royce introduced a smaller, lower horsepower car called the 20 HP to provide an offering in the lower price range than its larger 40/50. It was needed to compete with the soft post-World War I market. Originally meant as a stop-gap car, the success of the 20 HP was such that its successor, the 20/25, was introduced in 1929. The 20/25 was destined to become the most popular Rolls-Royce between the wars with 3,827 sold worldwide by 1936. This 1934 Rolls-Royce 20/25 is equipped with a stylish coachbuilt H.J. Mulliner three-position Sedanca drophead coupe body with rear-hinged doors, one of four known to exist.
Subjected to a $240,000 nut-and-bolt restoration completed in 2001, the car is finished in a brown and tan body with brown fenders. The well-fitted dark brown three-position convertible top caps off the sporting look of the body. The iconic Rolls-Royce radiator shell is topped with the obligatory Spirit of Ecstasy mascot and is mounted between large chrome-plated Lucas headlamps. The interior is trimmed in fine-pleated ivory leather with dark brown Wilton carpeting. The instrument panel and door caps are highly polished grained wood. The drive is right-hand, as were all British-built Rolls-Royce prior to 1946, and large chrome-plated handles operate the gear control and parking brake.
The 20/25 chassis is based on a 128.7-inch wheelbase chassis powered by a 3699cc OHV inline-6 cylinder engine with a single downdraft Rolls-Royce carburetor. Power is transmitted to the rear axle by a 4-speed manual transmission. Chassis lubrication is provided by a single-shot Bijur system, and brakes are 4-wheel drums with external mechanical servo assist. The whitewall tires are mounted on tan steel-spoke wheels with the single spare tire and wheel mounted on the large-capacity rear deck. This beautiful Full CCCA Classic 20/25 Rolls-Royce includes all of its chassis cards and build documents, and it’s ready for any show or event.
