As Ferrari’s most advanced road model at debut, the brilliant, hybrid-powertrain LaFerrari marked the culmination of the Formula 1 technologies developed at Maranello that helped the marque win an unprecedented eight World Manufacturer’s Championships from 1999 to 2008, including five straight titles from 2000 through 2004. Featuring already stunning performance from its 789 HP V-12 internal-combustion engine, an electric motor serves an additional 161 HP. In addition to its staggering performance potential, the LaFerrari also features aggressive and purposeful styling with amazing built-in aerodynamic features.
Two variants were sold, the coupe (with 500 produced 2013-2016), and the convertible LaFerrari Aperta (with just 210 built 2016-2018). This stunning 2014 La Ferrari Aperta is a particularly special example, as indicated by its factory-installed plaque identifying this example as the last produced, reflecting the information provided when the car left production. Phil Bachman ordered this LaFerrari Aperta in Giallo Triplo Strato paint with a thin Italian flag stripe added by special request. Bearing S/N 231972, this LaFerrari Aperta’s odometer reads just 96 miles at the time of writing.
Based upon a competition-style carbon fiber monocoque chassis, this LaFerrari Aperta’s 6.3L/949 HP hybrid drive V-12 engine is numbered 397021 and delivers its massive performance potential in concert with Ferrari’s F1-inspired HY-KERS Kinetic Energy Recovery System, F1 7-speed dual clutch automatic transmission, and E-Diff electric limited-slip differential. The F1-derived manettino provides a selection of drive modes on command. Underpinnings include double-wishbone front and multi-link rear suspension, electronic speed-sensitive steering, and carbon ceramic disc brakes with Rosso brake calipers residing behind five-spoke forged alloy wheels.
Finished in Giallo Triplo Strato, this LaFerrari Aperta is handsomely complemented by Scuderia Ferrari front-fender shields and a Pelle Nera and Giallo interior. The triple-layer special color combination was a $28,712 factory option alone, supplemented by the removable carbon fiber hardtop, a $71,779 factory option, plus the optional carbon fiber outer upper costing an additional $41,271. Brilliant Bi-xenon headlamps provide illumination. In addition to its corresponding Attestation for Special Series Vehicles Yellow Book issued by Ferrari Classiche in 2017, this Ferrari engineering and styling masterpiece is accompanied at auction by its window sticker and its books and manuals.
In recognition of its special character, the front storage lid of this LaFerrari Aperta bears the signatures of the Ferrari assembly line staff that brought it into existence. Displayed at the 2018 Celebration Exotic Car Festival, this 2018 Ferrari LaFerrari Aperta exemplifies its name as “The Ferrari” in every possible respect.
