Born of Ferrari CEO Luca di Montezemolo’s desire for a new and exciting successor to the remarkable F50, the Ferrari Enzo entered production in 2002 as the world’s most technically advanced road car and a street-legal interpretation of Ferrari’s contemporary World Champion Formula One racers. Based on a comprehensive design brief that placed emphasis on function before form, the Enzo was the starting point for a new generation of Ferrari V-12 engines adapting the company’s F1 technologies.
The largest-displacement V-12 since that which powered Ferrari’s 1968-69 Can-Am racers, the new 65-degree, DOHC engine displaced a full 6 liters, featured electronic sequential-port fuel injection, drive-by-wire throttle activation, four valves per cylinder, the same variable-length induction system first used in the 1995 F1 car, and the first continuously variable exhaust valve timing system; all were controlled in unison by an extremely sophisticated Bosch Motronic engine management system, just one in an array of computerized systems that seamlessly communicate with each other to maintain optimal performance.
This advanced new V-12 powered 651 HP through a lightning-quick, paddle-shifted 6-speed sequential gearbox, both bolted as a unit into a rear tube subframe mounted to the Enzo’s carbon fiber and aluminum honeycomb tub. The Enzo’s all-independent suspension combined pushrod-actuating double wishbones with coil springs and electronically controlled shocks and anti-roll bars; Bridgestone Potenza tires on 19-inch center-lock alloy wheels translated the Enzo’s advanced underpinnings into seemingly impossible cornering power and overall roadholding.
The Brembo disc brakes were the first on a road car to incorporate carbon ceramic discs, providing stopping power formerly reserved for elite racing machinery. Cloaking all that technical brilliance is a carbon fiber body designed in Pininfarina’s wind tunnel to place aerodynamics before aesthetics, all the while maintaining a strong identification with Ferrari’s F1 cars, especially its distinctive nose section. While not a grand-touring car in the traditional sense, the Enzo provides comfortable, custom-fitted, racing-style seats, fore-aft and lateral pedal adjustment, and driver-focused instrumentation and controls, enabling a tailored driving environment.
Showing an odometer reading of just 2,745 miles, this 2004 Ferrari Enzo is a rare example indeed as one of only six finished in lustrous Grigio Titanio paint, here complemented with a black leather interior with contrasting red stitching.
