This 2015 Porsche 918 Spyder is equipped with the rare and highly desirable Weissach Package and is the only U.S. 918 Spyder ordered from the factory with a matte-black wrap and exposed carbon-fiber bodywork equipped with Nomex lightweight Alcantera bucket seats. The 918 Spyder is an engineering masterpiece that has managed to seamlessly merge race-car performance with environmentally friendly fuel economy. No other car can claim 887 total horsepower, attain a top speed of 217 miles per hour, and have a combined city/highway fuel-economy rating of 67 miles per gallon.
Nothing demonstrates Porsche’s ability to respond to change and redefine the meaning of performance like its latest “hyper car” creation—the Porsche 918 Spyder. Porsche first introduced the 918 Spyder at the Frankfurt Auto Show in 2013. The automotive press was both excited as well as skeptical when Porsche announced its lofty goals of building a world-class sports car that could provide race-car acceleration, precision handling, and long-range fuel economy. In short, Porsche was letting the world know that it was going to “redefine” the meaning of performance when combined with an equal emphasis on being environmentally friendly.
The plan was to build 918 cars during a 21-month period commencing the last quarter of 2013 and ending around the middle of 2015. Porsche has created a plug-in hybrid rocket that utilizes a bespoke 608-horsepower 4.6-liter direct fuel-injected V-8 engine—based on its incredibly successful RS Spyder prototype race car—combined with two electric motors. Helping to drive the rear wheels is a 154-horsepower electric motor, while the front wheels are driven by an electric motor rated at 125 horsepower, meaning that the 918 Spyder benefits from all-wheel-drive traction. That’s important when you have a cumulative 887 horsepower to put to the ground.
Because the V-8 sports a 180-degree crankshaft, the car produces a snarling exhaust note unlike anything else on the road. The acceleration is simply stunning: 0-60 in 2.5 seconds and a factory-rated top speed of 217 miles per hour. The Spyder can be operated in one of five modes; electric, hybrid, hybrid sport, race and hot lap. This particular car was delivered new to Brumos Porsche in Jacksonville, Florida, and is equipped with the Weissach Package—an expensive option that raised the base price of the 918 Spyder from $845,000 to $929,000. The $84,000 Weissach Package consists of a multitude of deletions and substitutions that remove a total 90 pounds of weight from the vehicle.
Substitutions include such items as the RS Spyder-design magnesium wheels for a weight savings of 14.9 kilograms, titanium bolts on the chassis in lieu of steel for a weight savings of 0.8 kilograms, weight-optimized braking system using titanium brake pad backing plates for a weight savings of 2.0 kilograms. One unique option that was ordered on this car was paint delete with a matte-black body wrap saving an additional 2.3 kilograms. The 918 Spyder that set the fastest lap record for a street-legal production car of 6:57 at the Nürburgring 12.8-mile course was equipped with the Weissach Package.
