Renowned for infusing its road models with racing technology, Porsche took that ethos to extreme heights with the 918 Spyder, first shown as a concept car at Geneva in March 2010, followed by its debut in RSR racing form at the 2011 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Production of the 918 Spyder spanned the 2013 and 2015 model years, with 918 built, with its production number matching its model designation. Featuring cutting-edge technical breakthroughs throughout, the mid-engine 918 Spyder carries the purposeful looks and built-in aerodynamic wizardry of a Le Mans endurance racer, with design overseen by Michael Mauer.
Power is delivered by a naturally aspirated, 4.6L DOHC 32-valve V-8 engine with direct fuel injection, generating 608 HP. A technical masterpiece, it features a flat-plane crankshaft, titanium connecting rods, dry-sump lubrication and the same basic architecture as the unit powering Porsche’s RS Spyder Le Mans Prototype. Front and rear electric motors include parallel full hybrid assist and raise peak output to 887 HP and 944 lb-ft of torque. A 7-speed PDK dual-clutch automatic transaxle delivers the power and includes a hydraulic rear differential lock. A liquid-cooled 6.8 kWh lithium-ion battery pack resides behind the passenger compartment.
Capable of topping 210 MPH with electric all-wheel drive, e-boost and energy recovery, the 918 Spyder can also reach 93 MPH in electric-only mode. Five distinct driving modes provide ease of driving, while progressively sharpening response and performance, including Hybrid and Race modes for track use, as well as an all-out Hot Lap setting. In the finest Porsche tradition, the 918 Spyder clocked the first sub-7-minute lap time on Germany’s Nürburgring circuit.
Offered with the odometer reading just 845 miles at the time of writing, this 2015 Porsche 918 Spyder Weissach is the only example produced in visually stunning Paint-to-Sample Pure Orange, a $21,000 option, with matching interior piping in Color-to-Sample Pure Orange, instead of the usual green. The Weissach Package, named after Porsche’s legendary development center, maximizes the 918 Spyder’s performance and presence with extensive lightweight materials and visual enhancements throughout.
Harnessing this 918 Spyder’s stunning performance are Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM), Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus, Porsche Active Aerodynamics, a carbon fiber front splitter and rear diffuser, and an exotic Inconel exhaust with top pipes. The Porsche Ceramic Composite hybrid braking system includes 6-piston front and 4-piston rear Acid Green finished calipers residing behind 918 Spyder magnesium 20-inch front and 21-inch rear wheels mounting 265/35ZR20 front and 325/30ZR21 rear tires. Front axle lift, a $10,500 option, heightens usability.
Other choice features include two-piece carbon fiber reinforced plastic roadster tops, dual-zone automatic climate control and an audiophile-quality Burmester surround sound system including 11 speakers and a 512-watt amplifier. Equipped with the extremely desirable and valuable Weissach Package, this electrifying one-of-one, Paint-to-Sample 2015 Porsche 918 Spyder Weissach is much more than a supercar; rather, it represents the daring engineering and shattering performance its maker is renowned for delivering since inception.
