While the 993-generation of Porsche’s evergreen 911 was the last with air-cooled powerplants, Gunther Werks of Huntington Beach, California, keeps the faith with its extraordinary remastered 911s. While its finished products are stunning to look at and lavishly hand-built and trimmed to virtual perfection, the company is also steadfastly committed to race-inspired performance, proven in 2020 when professional racing driver Randy Pobst achieved a 1:30.99 lap time with one of Gunther Werks’ cars at WeatherTech Raceway at Laguna Seca, California—as fast as a McLaren P1.
Known as “Blue Phoenix,” this awesome 1995 Porsche 911 Speedster is one of only 25 Speedster conversions remastered by Gunther Werks. Offered with just 120 miles since build completion, the car was disassembled and rebuilt with extensive carbon fiber bodywork, an upgraded suspension and a beautifully trimmed bespoke interior. The 4.0L flat 6-cylinder engine was developed by Rothsport Racing in Oregon. Technical highlights include a custom crankshaft and connecting rods, cylinder barrels, and Mahle pistons, plus individual throttle bodies, coil-over-plug ignition, and a twin-map Motec ECU.
Rated at 430 HP and 330 lb-ft of torque with a 7,800 RPM redline, this potent mill’s power and performance are delivered by a custom Getrag G50 6-speed manual gearbox and mechanical 40% locking limited-slip differential with carbon clutches. Underpinnings include custom JRZ RS Pro coilovers with remote reservoirs and Brembo 4-wheel disc brakes with red calipers and slotted rotors, mounted behind the forged aluminum three-piece wheels. The passenger compartment features an integrated roll hoop underneath the rear tonneau, plus thoughtful storage compartments with fitted luggage under each side of the tonneau headrests.
In addition to lightweight carbon fiber bucket seats, luxurious features abound, including carbon fiber sill plates with “Blue Phoenix” lettering, a carbon fiber dashboard, a leather-wrapped carbon fiber steering wheel with orange 12 o’clock stripe, lightweight RS-style interior door pulls, and a Porsche Classic Apple CarPlay radio. Other choice highlights include a front nose lift system as well as brilliant custom projector headlights made from forged T-6061 aluminium components and carbon fiber, with Bi-LED projectors and active daytime running lights. A recently completed service and inspection by Gunther Werks included the installation of a new battery.
Stunning in every possible respect and built, or more correctly, “remastered” by Gunther Werks, this 1995 Porsche 911 Speedster exemplifies everything great about Porsche’s final air-cooled series.
