This rare Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren is one of only 141 produced for the United States market in 2006 and shows just 1,365 miles on the odometer. The name SLR stands for Sport Light Racing and is more than just a marketing moniker. The inspiration for this car was the legendary Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR, the car that dominated the international racing scene and captured the 1955 World Sports Car Championship. At the discretion of Alfred Neubauer (head of Mercedes Benz Racing) and Rudy Uhlenhaut (Chief Design Engineer)—the 300SLR was retired from competition after the fateful and disastrous 1955 crash at Le Mans that killed 85 people—still to this day the worst racing accident in history.
With no more competition in their future, Uhlenhaut repurposed two of the remaining test mule 300SLR’s and turned them into the “Uhlenhaut Coupe”—essentially street legal race cars capable of a top speed of 180 miles per hour and considered the undisputed world’s-fastest street cars in 1955. Mercedes-Benz decided to honor its racing past when it combined with its Formula One racing partner McLaren in 2003 to introduce the SLR McLaren supercar.
On one hand, it was an engineering tour de force with cutting-edge technology featuring a carbon-fiber monocoque chassis, Sensotronic brake control—a form of brake by wire, carbon-ceramic brake discs, stability control, traction control and a sport touch-shift automatic transmission. On the other hand, it paid homage to its proud racing history—specifically the 300SLR—with its gullwing doors, dual side-exit exhaust pipes, rear-mounted spoiler plus air brake and dominant front-fender side vents. With its supercharged 5.5-liter V-8 engine producing 617 horsepower, the SLR can attain a top speed of 206 miles per hour and accelerate from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 3.5 seconds.
