Few could have anticipated the imposing yet incongruous sight of a six-foot-tall, near three ton, V-12-powered, four-wheel drive behemoth at the 1986 Brussels Auto Show - much less one appearing on the Lamborghini stand. But then Lamborghini was never one to follow convention or perceived wisdom, and rarely has this free-thinking approach been embodied more succinctly than with the company’s fantastically idiosyncratic LM002.

In fact, its genesis stretched back as far as the ill-fated Chrysler V-8-powered Cheetah military vehicle of 1977, the failure of which led Lamborghini - with hindsight, somewhat optimistically - to reason that a four-cam V-12-powered derivative might be more attractive to U.S. or Middle East-based armed forces instead. Eventually, and reluctantly, accepting that accessing the defence market was somewhat fanciful, the company pressed a civilian version of the vehicle into limited production, with some 328 being constructed between 1986 and 1993.

Powered by a suitably adapted version of the mighty Countach engine, the LM002 featured a tubular steel chassis clad with aluminium and fibreglass panels, boasting a typically luxurious Lamborghini interior including full leather trim, air conditioning and electric windows. A five-speed ZF gearbox transmitted the engine’s generous 444 bhp to the road, whilst switchable two- and four-wheel drive ensured that all road surfaces and environments were adequately catered for. Performance was spectacular for a vehicle of such size, mass and rudimentary aerodynamics, with 60 mph achieved in under eight seconds and a top speed of 118 mph - although a fuel tank of some 290 litres hinted at its prodigious thirst.

magazine, and described by him not entirely inaccurately as “the closest thing to a street-legal Tiger Tank”, LM002s found favour across the whole gamut of the rich and famous. Indeed, it is unlikely that there are any other cars in history which have simultaneously been enjoyed by clientele as diverse as Keke Rosberg, Malcolm Forbes, and Tina Turner.

Delivered new to Lausanne-based Lamborghini Distributor Codeco S.A. on 21 March 1988, the International Lamborghini Register lists chassis 12103 as having been originally finished in dark blue with champagne leather interior, and being powered by a carburettor version of Lamborghini’s magnificent L510 engine. The vehicle remained in Switzerland for the early part of its life - its mighty powerplant having been rebuilt at Lamborghini Lausanne in 1996 according to a prior sales advertisement. It was purchased by Parisian Charles-Antoine Roucayrol in 2006 and re-registered with the local licence number 771 QZE 75. In 2009 the engine was overhauled and in 2012 the differential was serviced, invoices for both are on file.

Acquired by the vendor subsequently, chassis 12103 is beautifully presented in its original colour scheme with contrasting red Lamborghini Taurus symbols and lettering. The recipient of a total respray in 2019, this giant of Lamborghini history - both physically and metaphorically - is ready to enthrall its fortunate new owner once again, simultaneously exerting its considerable presence wherever it goes.

Pochi avrebbero potuto prevedere l’imponente ma incongrua sorpresa destata da un colosso a quattro ruote motrici e con motore V-12, alto un metro e ottanta, per quasi tre tonnellate di peso, esposto allo stand Lamborghini al Salone dell'Auto di Bruxelles del 1986. Anche se la Lamborghini non è mai stata un’azienda che seguiva le convenzioni o la saggezza tradizionale, raramente questo approccio di libero pensiero è stato incarnato in modo più totale ed irriverente che con il fantasticamente irriverente LM002 dell'azienda di Sant’Agata Bolognese.

In effetti, la sua origine risaliva indietro negli anni fino allo sfortunato veicolo militare Cheetah Chrysler V-8 del 1977, un progetto il cui fallimento portò Lamborghini - con il senno di poi forse ottimisticamente - a pensare che un 4X4 con motore V-12 con quattro alberi a camme potesse essere più attraente per le forze armate statunitensi, o del Medio Oriente. Alla fine, anche se con una certa riluttanza, Automobili Lamborghini dovette accettare che l'accesso al mercato della difesa, fosse un progetto po' troppo fantasioso. A questo punto la società spinse per avere una versione civile del veicolo, da realizzarsi in produzione limitata. Ne verranno assemblati circa 328, costruiti tra il 1986 e il 1993.

Alimentato da una versione opportunamente adattata del potente motore Countach, l'LM002 presentava un telaio tubolare in acciaio rivestito con pannelli in alluminio e fibra di vetro, che vantava i tradizionali interni Lamborghini tipicamente lussuosi con finiture in pelle, aria condizionata e alzacristalli elettrici. Il cambio ZF a cinque marce trasmetteva i generosi 444 CV del motore alla strada, mentre la trazione a due e a quattro ruote motrici, selezionabile dall’abitacolo, assicurava che tutte le superfici stradali, in qualsiasi condizione, potessero essere affrontate.

Le prestazioni erano spettacolari per un veicolo di tali dimensioni, massa e aerodinamica “rudimentale”, con i 100 Km/h raggiunti in meno di otto secondi e una velocità massima di quasi 200 Km/h. Il serbatoio del carburante di circa 290 litri, serviva a ricordare della sua sete prodigiosa.

, e descritto da lui, in modo piuttosto consono, come "la cosa legale, più simile ad un carro armato Tiger", la LM002 ha incontrato il favore di tutti i possibili ricchi e famosi. In effetti, è improbabile che ci siano altre auto che, nella loro storia, potranno vantare di essere state contemporaneamente apprezzate da una clientela così diversa come quella composta da Keke Rosberg, Malcolm Forbes e Tina Turner.

Consegnata nuova al distributore Lamborghini Codeco S.A. con sede a Losanna, il 21 marzo 1988, il registro internazionale Lamborghini elenca la LM 002 telaio 12103 come originariamente finita in blu scuro con interni in pelle champagne e alimentato dalla versione a carburatore del magnifico motore 12 cilindri L510 di Lamborghini. Il veicolo è rimasto in Svizzera per la prima parte della sua vita e, secondo quanto riportato in una precedente inserzione di vendita, il suo potente propulsore è stato ricostruito presso la Lamborghini di Losanna nel 1996. È stata in seguito acquistata, siamo nel 2006, dal parigino Charles-Antoine Roucayrol e reimmatricolata con la targa locale numero 771 QZE 75.

Nel 2009 il motore è stato revisionato e, nel 2012 il differenziale è stato tagliandato, come dimostrato dalle due e fatture presenti nel faldone collegato alla macchina.

Acquistata in seguito dal conferente, LM 002 telaio 12103 è magnificamente presentata nella sua combinazione di colori originale con simboli del toro e scritte Lamborghini rosse a contrasto. Destinatario di una completa revisione effettuata nel 2019, questo gigante della storia Lamborghini - sia fisicamente sia metaforicamente - è pronto ad affascinare ancora una volta il suo fortunato, nuovo, proprietario, continuando ad imporre, al contempo, la sua notevole presenza che lo rende unico ovunque vada.
