The Lamborghini LM002 was among, if not, the first of its kind. As a luxurious and exotic off-roader, the car represents an interesting initiative taken by Lamborghini at the height of the Countach era. The car can trace its roots to the Cheetah program of 1977, a project with interests in producing a new off-roader for military use. Unfortunately, the project was handed over to Mobility Technology International, and Lamborghini was left with a few experimental vehicles.
Rather than do away with the program, Lamborghini decided to further evolve it and produce a civilian model. In 1986, the LM002 made its debut at the 1986 Brussels Motor Show. Utilizing the drivetrain from its sibling, the Countach, the 5.1-liter V-12 produced 444 hp at 6,800 rpm and 396 foot-pounds of torque at 5,000 rpm. Incredible power for any off-road vehicle of the time. The LM002 certainly makes its presence known as it sits just over six-feet tall, extending over fifteen-feet long, and weighing over three tons. However, don’t mistake its off-road stature for sparse, off-road interior. The car features full leather seating, tinted power windows, wood accents, air conditioning, and a high-end sound system. A perfect blend of exotic looks, off-road performance, and a supreme interior.
The car offered here is one of just 40 carbureted versions and is appropriately rare and unique. Its Acapulco blue exterior over grey interior finish complements the already stellar design to the fullest. More so, the Americana wheels fitted with Pirelli Scorpion tires enhance the car’s off-road presence. In 2011, the car’s dashboard was signed by none other than the legendary Lamborghini test driver, Valentino Balboni. The car also features the original owner’s manual, tonneau, and factory-optional toolbox.
In 2015, the LM002 joined a private collection in Texas and has since been used sparingly with less than 100 miles added. Furthermore, the Scorpion tires were removed for preservation and a new set of tires installed. The Pirelli Scorpion tires are included with the sale. In preparation for its current offering, the car was recently serviced and thoroughly detailed from top to bottom, including steam cleaning of the engine and underside.
To say the car is merely an off-roader is an understatement. Rather, this LM002 provides the chance to explore all types of terrain in premier comfort with exceptional performance. Most importantly, however, this highly original and very well-optioned LM002 offers the opportunity to experience one of Lamborghini’s most riveting automobiles.
