By the late 1990s it seemed Porsche was the only absentee from the supercar sweepstakes, but the Carrera GT changed all of that with a clean sheet design that proved Porsche’s resolve to maintain supremacy against all challengers.
Operating without restrictions, Porsche motorsport director Herbert Ampfrerer gathered an all-star team of designers, powertrain specialists and aerodynamicists to create what “Road & Track” magazine would praise as “the best road-going Porsche ever.” The first road car with a chassis made entirely of carbon-fiber composite, the Carrera GT’s lightweight 220-pound base structure provided the rigidity necessary to employ Formula 1-style pushrod-actuated inboard suspension and provide excellent rollover protection.
Originally designed for the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the Carrera GT’s all-aluminum engine V-10 uses Nikasil coated bores, forged titanium connecting rods, forged pistons and Porsche’s VarioCam timing system to produce 605 HP and 435 lb-ft of torque. To insulate the cockpit from any vibration, the V-10 is mounted in a carbon-fiber composite cradle along with a racing GT-sourced Porsche Composite Ceramic Clutch (PCCC) and an all-new transverse 6-speed manual gearbox.
Center-locking magnesium 19-inch front and 20-inch rear wheels shod with Michelin Pilot Sport tires and ceramic composite brakes deliver the Carrera GT’s handling into the upper reaches of supercar performance, aided by a 3-piece composite belly pan and rear diffuser that generates almost 900 pounds of downforce at 185 MPH, and the Carrera GT’s 3,000-pound curb weight contributes to the car’s 205 MPH top speed. A one-owner example driven just 1,334 miles, this 2004 Porsche Carrera GT complements its classic GT Silver Metallic paint with dark gray upholstery in a superbly tailored cockpit that is without doubt the most highly refined of any Porsche.
Time and technology march on, but the Carrera GT will always be prized as Porsche’s ultimate weapon in the supercar wars.
