Porsche's goal in creating the 964 RS was to offer a basic, lightweight 911 with minimal luxury options. Thus, it produced a de-contented C2, stripped of most standard comfort and convenience features. While the Carrera RS 3.6 was available in Europe, it was unable to meet U.S. import regulations, so it was slightly detuned to meet DOT regulations and dubbed the RS America.
Its M64/01 engine developed 250 bhp at 6,100 rpm, and the five-speed G50/05 transmission was smooth and positive. The RSA was fitted with the M030 Sport suspension, which included progressively wound coil springs, a larger front anti-roll bar, and uprated shocks. Also standard were larger 17-in. C2 Turbo wheels, and "Big Red" disc brakes. There was now a manual steering rack, and a fixed whale tail replaced the C2's retractable wing.
Porsche Cars North America CEO and President Fred Schwab, nudged by his predecessor, Brian Bowler, stated that "this is the car that the Porsche Club of America built," but former Works driver Vic Elford got some credit too, bending the company's ear a bit after hearing from some hardcore U.S. club members that their favorite car was turning into an overweight GT unsuitable for autocross and track sessions. Upon its introduction, the company declared that, "The 1993 911 RS America captures the spirit of the original RS with its emphasis on performance." The RSA was satisfyingly quick, taking but 4.6 seconds to reach 60 miles an hour and could reach 157 mph.
Only 701 RS Americas were constructed over a two-year period beginning in 1992 for the 1993-1994 model years. The 617 built for 1993 had their rear seats replaced with carpeted storage; the 1994 models got those seats back. Only four options were available: an electric sunroof, air conditioning, a limited-slip differential, and a stereo system. Standard colors were limited to Guards Red, Black, or Grand Prix White, and two metallic colors, Midnight Blue and Polar Silver, were available at extra cost.
Offered here is the 34th of 297 RS Americas built in early 1992 (for 1993). Its Certificate of Authenticity states that it was delivered 25 March 1992, in Polar Silver Metallic with electrically adjustable sport seats trimmed in black leather and grey cord inserts with red trim. While many RSAs were quickly dedicated to club racing use, this fine example is an exception. It was reportedly purchased from its original owner in Germany by Porsche specialist RPM Sports Cars of Houston, Texas, who in turn sold it to the current owner, a prominent collector, in 2008 with the odometer reading just 1,501 miles.
The consignor says it has been driven regularly to ensure that all systems work properly, and the odometer reading is now just 1,633 miles. Recently serviced by a factory-trained Porsche technician, it is supplied with all its original manuals, a spare key, and tool roll.
Carefully preserved and in pristine showroom condition, this RSA may be the best in the world and certainly warrants standing amongst the finest collection of limited-production 964s.
