“The same engineers who developed the Carrera Cup race cars are responsible for the brilliant RS America, their goal: the incomparable feel of a race car through reduced weight, modified steering, and firmer, sportier suspension. To save weight, they eliminated the air-conditioning system, power steering pump, and sunroof and replaced the rear seats with a storage compartment. The retractable rear spoiler, motor, and mechanism were replaced with a lightweight fixed tail spoiler”. Thus reads the Porsche factory brochure for the 911 RS America Coupé, a model specifically created for the U.S. market in place of the European-only 964 Carrera RS.

The RS America used the body shell and glass from the standard “P” program 964 Carrera 2 and retained that model’s engine, manual transmission, brakes, and safety features. The RSA had specially upholstered front seats, which were covered in a black corduroy fabric, and as noted in the factory’s marketing materials, the 964’s rear jump seats were removed to help reduce weight. The model retained its electric window lifts, but the regular door trim panels were replaced with simple, lightweight cards similar to those used on the 1973 Carrera RS 2.7. When all was said and done, the RS America weighed a mere 1,340 kilograms. Only 701 examples were built for the U.S. market in 1993.

The car is fitted with a type M64/01 3.6-litre engine which produces 247 brake horsepower at 6,100 rpm and 310 Nm of torque at 4,800 rpm. Its power is delivered through the very tractable G50 five-speed manual transmission, and its standard wheels were 17x7J with 205/50ZR17 tyres in the front and 17x8J with 255/40ZR17 tyres in the rear. Large power-assisted ventilated disc brakes were more than up to the task of slowing the car from speed. Contemporary road tests showed this package was capable of quite brilliant performance, as it could reach 0–60 mph in 5.4 seconds and had a top speed of 162 mph.

In October 1992, this fine RS America left the Porsche factory finished in Guards Red with a black cloth and leatherette interior, which was highlighted by red seat belts. Its original owner specified the retention of an automatically controlled air-conditioning system (Option M573), the 40 per cent limited-slip differential (M220), and Michelin tyres. Included with the sale of the car are a factory documentation letter and the car’s original registration papers, which were issued by the state of Texas on 26 February 1993 to a Ralph DuBose, of Houston; during the time of registration, the odometer read 36 miles.

The car was eventually sold to Victory Motorcars, of Houston, from whom the current consignor acquired it on 1 April 2013, with the odometer reading 49,500 miles. The car was then shipped to Europe from the Port of Houston. Today, with only one registered owner and having added fewer than 250 additional miles, this car appears in excellent condition inside and out. The underside of the body retains its factory application of Cosmoline, and inside, the electrically adjustable seats show little wear. The car will be supplied with its correct collapsible spare tyre, jack, and tool kit.

The Porsche enthusiast seeking a well-kept, low-mileage example of a rare and desirable high-performance Porsche Carrera could scarcely do better than this example.
