In the mid-1950s, Maserati was arguably at the height of its racing powers with both the 250F dominating Formula 1 and the 350S highly successful in endurance sports-car racing. In 1957, Maserati set about creating a new grand-touring road car that, at its heart, utilized a road-going version of the 350S sports car’s 3.5L DOHC long-stroke inline 6-cylinder engine. At the 1957 Geneva Salon, Maserati debuted two examples of this new GT coupe, one bodied by Allemano and the other by Carrozzeria Touring and featuring its “Superleggera” construction of a lightweight aluminum body, draped over a small-diameter steel-tubed skeleton.

After being met with resounding praise, the touring-bodied 3500 GT coupe would go into production later that year, with 1,984 examples being constructed by the model’s end in 1964. This stunning example, finished in metallic blue with a tan interior, features the 3.5L/217 HP aluminum-block inline 6-cylinder engine, breathing through three Weber twin-choke carburetors and mated to a ZF 4-speed manual gearbox. Stopping power comes from Girling disc brakes up front and finned aluminum drums in the rear, acting on a Salisbury live axle. Interior appointments include a gorgeous body-colored dashboard equipped with Jaeger gauges, all trimmed in rich tan leather.

Rounding out the package, the GT rides on Pirelli-shod painted wheels with bright Maserati-logoed hubcaps and trim rings. It’s a rare opportunity to acquire an early example of one of Maserati’s most successful and desirable road cars.
