The Ferrari Enzo will forever be considered a street-legal road car with the soul of a Formula 1 race car. One of 399 examples produced, this 2003 Enzo has only 3,150 original miles and is offered with Ferrari Classiche certification—the ultimate validation of its rarity and provenance. The direct transference of Formula 1 race technology was bestowed upon the Enzo throughout its entire design. The 6.0L 65-degree V-12 was a new “Enzo-only” engine that produced 660 HP. The paddle-shifted transmission is transplanted from its Formula 1 race car. Its center-section monocoque frame is constructed of carbon-fiber and honeycomb aluminum providing an ultra-light yet extremely rigid platform.
The body was shaped in the wind tunnel with the sole objective of meeting the sweet spot of low aerodynamic drag combined with maximum downforce. The underside panels of the chassis were shaped in accordance with the latest principles of “ground-effects,” enabling the bottom surface of the car to effectively scavenge airflow to create suction. The carbon-ceramic brakes are a first for a Ferrari road car and developed on the Scuderia Ferrari Formula 1 cars. The body shape was pure and uncompromised functional form—a Formula 1-inspired nose cone and center section with integrated fenders to encapsulate the overall structure and direct air-cooling to the engine, radiator and brakes.
It is historically significant to remember that the Enzo comes from an era of Ferrari dominance in Formula 1 with five world championships, earned in 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004 with driver Michael Schumacher behind the wheel. In addition to completing development work on the Enzo, he also designed the steering wheel that placed the critical operating controls in the center hub. The Enzo is a supercar that successfully blended Formula 1 technology into a modern road car and remains to this day an icon of the Ferrari stable.
