Previously part of a private collection, this 1984 Ferrari 512 BBi may well be the most low-mileage and original example in the world, having accumulated a total of 887 kilometers or 553 miles. The Prancing Horse had been emblematic of V-12 powerplants for decades when Ferrari introduced the 365 GT4 Berlinetta Boxer, whose 12-cylinder engine was in horizontally opposed form, a la Porsche, rather than in a V configuration. In fact Ferrari had used this layout successfully for years.
Its advantages were already proven in such Ferrari racers as the 1964-65 F1 cars, the undefeated 212 hill climb racer and again in the 1970-71 F1 machines, so when the front-engined Daytona began to age, Maranello turned to a mid-ship flat-12 configuration for its new flagship. The 365 GTB4/BB was succeeded by the Weber-carbureted 512BB and then the fuel injected BBi, introduced at the 1981 Frankfurt Auto Show. Production ended in 1984, when this astonishingly original 512 BBi rolled out of Maranello as one of the last hand-assembled cars in Ferrari history.
Finished in Rosso Corsa with a Black interior accented with Red piping and seat inserts, its last major service was recorded in 1997 at 124 kilometers; it received a minor servicing again in April 2003. It has been exercised enough to maintain its fitness, along the way collecting such prestigious awards as the Ferrari Club of America’s Coppa GT, Platinum and Coppa Bella Macchina Awards in 2006, and in 2011 the Outstanding Flat 12 Ferrari Award and a second Platinum. This top-tier, multi-award-winning Berlinetta Boxer is offered with the original tool kit, books and manuals, import papers and service records.
