Bentley’s first postwar luxury car was the Mark VI, which began production in 1946 and continued through 1952. Bentley was seeking innovation as they looked to separate themselves from other luxury car builders of the day—the Mark VI was that innovation. Not only was it the first model built with all-steel coachwork, it was also the first car fully assembled and completed at their factory. Coachwork was performed by Park Ward, a company founded in 1919 by William M. Park and Charles W. Ward. Park Ward supplied bodies for various cars in the early 1920’s and initially became associated with Bentley after they moved their chassis manufacturing factory to a nearby town.

By the mid-1920s Bentley had enlisted Park Ward to complete the coachwork for the majority of their cars. A takeover of Bentley by Rolls Royce in 1931 precluded Bentley purchasing a stake in Park Ward Coachwork. By the time production of the Mark VI began, Bentley was producing their own all-steel bodies at the factory in 4-door and 2-door saloon models and was also producing a chassis-only 2-door Drophead Coupe. This third model was produced and designated for coachwork companies as a base for custom coachwork. This particular model is rare indeed—a 1952 Bentley Mark VI Drophead Coupe that was built by Park Ward and is one of only 27 ever produced.

At the time this Bentley was built, it was the most expensive production car and fastest 5-seater in the world. The Mark VI has undergone extensive repairs by a Master Crewe certified technician with more than $29,000 spent at Bentley Denver. It is painted tan with brown fenders and skirts with red pinstriping. The luxurious presentation of the car is accented by the iconic chromed Flying B mascot, fender mounted mirrors, chrome bumpers and bumper guards and chrome grille. It is left-hand drive and the interior features gray leather upholstery with contrasting piping, wood grained dashboard, window sills, defroster and Smiths gauges.

Power comes via a 4.2 liter inline-6 engine and 4-speed manual transmission controlled by a column-mounted shifter. This is a beautiful and rare collectible car, a wonderful example of Bentley’s first postwar model.
