Today, the Seventh Series cars of 1930 continue to rank high among the most collectible and desirable Packard models of the 1925-1948 timeframe defined by the Classic Car Club of America as the Classic Era. Famed automobile designer Raymond Dietrich directly influenced their styling with major cues including setback cowls, elongated hoods and beautifully flowing fender lines. Bodies were of the same size across all Packard model series that year, even though available wheelbase lengths ranged from the 127.5 inches of the Model 726 Standard Eight chassis to the 145.5 inches of the 745 Deluxe Eight, with the differences taken up by hoods of various lengths as required.
Most Packards of the early 1930s were production cars—well-built, luxurious, smooth, powerful and quiet. Even these were relatively expensive, selling for the price of five or six brand-new Fords or Chevrolets. Packard entered the Great Depression with a commanding market share, robust exports and a strong balance sheet. Production was strong, even for the upscale Model 740 Custom Eights, reaching 6,200 examples in all. Handsomely finished in dark red paint accented by a beige canvas convertible top and red leather interior with matching rumble seat, this 1930 Packard 740 Custom Eight Roadster benefits from a nut-and-bolt restoration.
Power is delivered by a 385 CI inline 8-cylinder engine painted in correct Packard Green with a silver crankcase finish and black porcelain enamel accessories. A 4-speed manual transmission delivers the power and torque. Among this dashing Packard roadster’s features and accessories are driving lamps, a chrome radiator grille guard, a Goddess of Speed radiator mascot and special extra sports gear. Hallmarks of correctness include period-correct clamps, wiring and hardware, plus a correct wood-trimmed luggage rack on the rear. Chrome wire wheels and 1930s-style whitewall tires finish off this highly collectible and enjoyable prewar, Jazz Age Packard Roadster.
