Two of the greatest names in motorsport history, Mercedes-Benz and McLaren enjoyed a long and prosperous partnership that began in 1995 in a joint venture to compete in Formula 1. The pairing not only produced three Constructors’ World Championships and Drivers’ titles, it also created this magnificent Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren. A wonder of modern construction techniques, the SLR (an abbreviation for "Sport Leicht Rennsport" or Sport Light Racing) harks back to the mid-1950s Mercedes-Benz sports-racing cars piloted by Juan Manuel Fangio and Stirling Moss.

Like those all-conquering machines, the modern namesake is a technical tour-de-force and one of the most exhilarating automobiles on the planet. At 11,805 miles, this 2005 SLR coupe presents immaculately in Crystal Galaxy Black Mica paint with a rare and desirable red-on-black interior, the latter a $9,900 option that is virtually indispensable to the car’s exclusive nature and rich heritage. So too are the iconic swing-up doors, inspired by another Mercedes-Benz legend, the 1954-57 300SL Gullwing Coupe. The first road car constructed of carbon fiber using automation instead of hand-laying techniques, the SLR’s power resides in its all-aluminum supercharged 5.4L/617 HP SOHC V-8 engine.

Coupled to AMG’s Speedshift R 5-speed automatic transmission, it growls at idle and roars at full throttle through twin side pipes just aft of the front-wheel arches, a very cool visual touch that competes with the adaptive brake-deployed rear air brake for the most evocative 300SLR-inspired detail. The SLR’s advanced front and rear double-wishbone suspension works under the command of Mercedes-Benz’s stability-control system and carbon-ceramic disc brakes with ABS and Electronic Brake Force Distribution.

Cruise control, tilt-telescopic steering, power windows, mirrors and locks, dual-zone climate controls and rich leather upholstery all contribute to the sublime driving experience built into every aspect of this sensational Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren.
