To commemorate Pininfarina’s 70th anniversary as a coachbuilder, Luca di Montezemolo invited Sergio Pininfarina to design a limited-edition, front-engined Barchetta to evoke memories of previous open-topped classic Ferraris harking back to the 166MM.
The 550 Maranello was chosen as the basis for the new car. Its classic elegant proportions of a long bonnet, short tail and tall greenhouse provided the perfect platform for Pininfarina to conjure a tangible link back to models like the 365 GTB/4 Daytona Spider. Under the low-slung bonnet sat an aluminium V-12 that developed 485 bhp, endowing it with a top speed of 199 mph and a 0–60 time of just over four seconds.
In spite of this, Pininfarina’s decision to create a barchetta-styled variant was driven by a desire for design purity, rather than outright performance. To accentuate the Barchetta’s purity and elegance, Pininfarina also added design flourishes to imbue the car with the road racer philosophy of the past. This included a more rakish windshield and fixed twin roll hoops behind the seats. The interior boasted leather and carbon fibre bucket seats with numerous carbon fibre trim details throughout. Two-piece alloy wheels and an aluminium fuel cap unique to the Barchetta complete the visually stunning experience.
Specified in Argento Nürburgring over Grigio Scuro leather interior, it is complemented by Nero carpets. Delivered new to Germany in 2001, it spent almost 10 years with its first owner, accruing slightly over 10,000 km before its current owner then purchased the car in 2010 from official Ferrari dealer Lueg Sportivo. The car has been sparingly used since and now shows slightly under 12,000 km on the odometer. A recent appraisal of the car confirms that it is in excellent condition throughout and ready to be enjoyed by its new owner.
It is offered not only with its original books and tool kit, but also with a much-improved roof, installed by marque specialists Pavesi of Milan, making the convertible top function similar to that of the 360 Spider. This upgrade to the original incorporates an electric motor under the rear deck to assist the raising and lowering of the top far more practical, making for a wonderful all-weather grand tourer.

C'est la 550 Maranello qui a été choisie pour cette nouvelle version. Ses proportions élégantes et classiques, affichant un long capot, un arrière court et un pavillon généreux, constituaient pour Pininfarina une base parfaite pour établir un lien tangible avec des modèles comme la 365 GTB/4 Daytona Spider. Le capot bas dissimulait un V12 en aluminium qui développait 485 ch, ce qui permettait à la voiture d'atteindre 320 km/h et de passer de 0 à 100 km/h en un peu plus de quatre secondes.
Pourtant, la décision de Pininfarina de créer une telle version découvrable était conduite par la recherche d'une pureté de style, plutôt que de performances pures. Pour donner à la voiture encore plus d’élégance et de pureté, Pininfarina rehaussait l'ensemble de détails de style permettant d'insuffler à la voiture la philosophie sportive provenant des modèles passés. Cette volonté se traduisait par exemple par un pare-brise plus incliné et deux arceaux de sécurité derrière les sièges. L'intérieur comportait des sièges baquets en fibre de carbone et cuir, et affichait une finition incluant de nombreuses garnitures en fibre de carbone. Les jantes alliage en deux parties et un bouchon d'essence en aluminium spécifique à la Barchetta complétaient cette allure visuellement superbe.
Commandée de teinte "Argento Nürburgring" avec sellerie en cuir "Grigio Scuro", la voiture est aussi équipée d'une moquette "Nero". Livrée neuve en 2001 en Allemagne, elle a passé presque 10 ans chez son premier propriétaire, parcourant un peu plus de 10 000 km avant que son actuel propriétaire en prenne possession en 2010, auprès du distributeur Ferrari officiel Lueg Sportivo. La voiture a été peu utilisée depuis et le compteur affiche aujourd'hui 12 000 km. Une récente inspection a permis de confirmer son excellent état à tous points de vue, cette voiture étant prête à prendre la route entre les mains de son nouvel acheteur.
Elle est vendue non seulement avec sa trousse à outils et ses carnets d'origine, mais aussi avec une capote très améliorée, installée par le spécialiste Pavesi de Milan, ce qui rend la fonction décapotable semblable à la 360 Spider. Cette amélioration par rapport à la version originale comporte un moteur électrique sous le panneau arrière, pour rendre le déploiement et le repliage beaucoup plus facile, ce qui fait de cette voiture une merveilleuse grande routière idéale par tous les temps.
