Named after Pierre Veyron, the co-driver of the winning Type 57C Bugatti in the 1939 24 Hours of Le Mans, the Bugatti Veyron instantly assumed the mantle of the world’s greatest supercar upon its introduction in 2005. It was the fastest production car ever, and the most expensive, its sticker price exceeding $1.8 million when this blue-on-white example was built in October 2008. Based on the Bentley Hunaudieres concept vehicle unveiled at the 1999 Geneva Auto Salon and built at the Bugatti’s Molsheim factory in France, the Veyron’s design team was led by former Volkswagen Design Chief Hartmut Warkuss, with Jozef Kaban and Wolfgang Schreiber handling exterior and engineering respectively.

Their finished product shook the motoring world with a top speed of more than 250 MPH at the Volkswagen test track and later reproduced by BBC’s popular “Top Gear” TV show. Central to the Veyron’s stunning speed is its brilliantly engineered W-16 engine, a 1,001 HP titan bristling with 4 turbochargers, each cooled by an air-to-liquid intercooler. To quench the Veyron’s tremendous thermal output, the W-16 is cooled by no fewer than three radiators; three more serve duty as heat exchangers, and four more are dedicated to the air conditioning, engine oil, differential and the ultra-heavy-duty 7-speed paddle-shifted DSG transmission.

Despite the Veyron’s hefty 4,162-pound curb weight, it leaps from standstill with launch control engaged to reach 60 MPH in a mind-boggling 2.6 seconds and completes the quarter mile in 10.2 seconds at a blistering 143 MPH, with another 110 MPH still in hand. At full warp speed, the Veyron’s hydraulically actuated suspension lowers it to within 2.6 inches of the pavement; front air diffusers open and the rear spoiler simultaneously rises to turn the onrushing air into 770 pounds of downforce, rendering the car incredibly stable at top speed. Naturally, the Veyron’s carbon-fiber-reinforced silicon-carbide brakes are more than adequate, generating 1.3 g of deceleration.

The Veyron’s unequalled performance is matched with lavish interior appointments that include premium leather upholstery, brushed-alloy trim and controls, Airsystem climate controls, power seats and windows and a Burmester premium sound system, all part of the world’s most exclusive driving experience.
