One of Rolls-Royce’s most popular early vehicles, the Phantom II was the successor of the Phantom, or Phantom I, which was introduced for 1925 and succeeded the 40/50, the 12th example of which was more famously known as the Silver Ghost. The Silver Ghost is largely the vehicle that put Rolls-Royce on the map as a builder of robust, durable and quiet luxury automobiles, as in 1907 it completed a 15,000-mile reliability test between London and Glasgow 27 times. With press in tow to record the event, at 7,000 miles, the car had cost a mere £2.13 to operate, far less than many other motorcars at that point.
The Phantom name was largely derived from the quiet operating nature of the Rolls-Royce, and the Phantom II further carried that reputation when it was introduced for 1929. The 7.7L inline 6-cylinder introduced in the Phantom I was refined and mated directly to the 4-speed manual transmission, with an open driveshaft replacing the torque tube and rear-mounted transmission used in the Phantom I. The revised chassis used new semi-elliptical springs to mount the rear axle but carried over front semi-elliptical springs from the Phantom I. The Phantom II also incorporated the 4-wheel servo-assisted brakes and Bijur centralized lubrication system used on Springfield-built Phantom Is.
When production ceased in 1935, roughly 1,767 Phantom IIs had been built, each carrying a unique, coachbuilt body, some of which used exotic materials. This 1933 Rolls-Royce Phantom II is fitted with unique boattail skiff bodywork by W.B. Carter Coach and Boat Builders of Cambridgeshire, England. In typical boat builder fashion, the body is crafted from Honduras mahogany and designed in the tradition of a skiff—a small, light boat—with a boattail. An estimated 3,000 hours were invested in crafting the body, which uses dowel-and-peg joinery throughout, although the hood uses a wood veneer-on-steel in order to cope with the heat of the engine beneath and the sun above.
The caramel-colored interior is upholstered in leather with a pleated bench seat, a four-spoke steering wheel, instrumentation and plush carpeting. Rolling on wire wheels with blackwall tires, the Rolls-Royce carries the overall look of a vintage wooden boat very well, right down to the sidestep, which has the shape of a float. Rolls-Royce connoisseur James C. Leake first imported this Phantom II to the United States. Throughout its life, this 1933 Rolls-Royce Phantom II has been part of prestigious collections, including those of Millard Newman, Raymond Lutgert and Dean Becker.
