In 2003, the technical wizards at Stuttgart delighted Porsche fanatics and the motoring press alike with the Carrera GT, an all-new design packed with every advanced technology at Porsche’s disposal. Unconstrained by management, Porsche Motorsport Director Herbert Ampferer had drawn together specialists in carbon-fiber construction, powertrain design and aerodynamics to fill out his design team. They designed an incredibly strong yet lightweight 220-pound core structure made entirely of carbon-fiber, the first in any road-going automobile.
Onto this rigid platform they grafted Formula 1-style pushrod-actuated inboard suspension and 15-inch disc brakes using Porsche's proprietary carbon-fiber-reinforced Silicon Carbide ceramic-composite discs behind center-locking magnesium 19-inch front and 20-inch rear wheels and Michelin Pilot Sport tires. Originally designed for the shelved 1999 Le Mans prototype, the Carrera’s all-aluminum V-10 engine features Nikasil-coated cylinder linings, forged-titanium connecting rods, forged pistons and Porsche’s VarioCam timing system to generate 605 HP and 435 lb-ft of torque.
Mounted in a separate cradle to insulate the cockpit from vibrations, it is backed by a specially designed 6-speed transaxle. Porsche aerodynamicists developed a beautiful body for the Carrera GT that combines a distinctly Porsche look with incredible ground effects to make full use of the car’s immense power and precision handling. A three-piece belly pan and rear diffuser, and an automated rear spoiler that deploys at 70 MPH create almost 900 pounds of downforce at 185 MPH, planting the Carrera GT all the way to its 205 MPH top speed.
The Carrera GT’s cockpit features plentiful and finely crafted leather upholstery and trim, excellent instrumentation and such luxury items as power windows, air conditioning and a CD sound system. Driven just 25 original miles and classically turned out in GT Silver Metallic with a Terracotta interior, this 2004 Carrera GT is surely one of the most pristine examples in the world.
