A milestone of engineering, the 993 generation of the Porsche 911 Turbo was the first 911 to incorporate all-wheel drive into the turbocharged model using the technology adopted from the legendary Porsche 959. It was also the last air-cooled 911, and the first model to use twin turbochargers and twin intercoolers—two KKK K16 turbos—for faster spool-up and virtual elimination of turbo lag. This Guards Red 1996 Porsche 911 Turbo is from that generation. The 3.6L flat-6 engine produces 408 HP using the Bosch Motronic 5.2 Engine Management System, which integrates sequential fuel injection, dual ignition and self-adapting mapping for engine reliability, cold start enrichment and idle control.
The 993 is undeniably fast, with a 0-60 elapsed time in 3.8 seconds and a top speed approaching 184 MPH. However, beyond the performance metrics is the seamless way the power is delivered: The twin turbos deliver massive amounts of torque at low RPM—332 lb-ft at just 2,500 RPM—and the car just progressively develops speed thereafter. The all-wheel drive selectively apportions power to each of the four wheels, offering tenacious grip and driver control confidence.
The Guards Red exterior features wide arch fender flares, sculptured lower rocker panels, a full set of 18-inch hollow spoke “turbo twist” alloy wheels, Porsche center caps with hand painted crests and a fixed “whale tail” rear spoiler. The interior is draped in black supple full leather with air conditioning, power windows, power door locks, power mirrors, a power-operated sunroof, heated front seats and a digital sound package. This 911 is regarded by many knowledgeable enthusiasts as the ultimate iteration of the Porsche Turbo lineage—don’t let this example speed away.
