In the early 1950s, it was U.S. importer Max Hoffman who convinced Porsche that there was a market for a leaner, meaner, convertible version of the 356. Thus was born the Porsche Speedster, which would go on to tremendous success, both on and off the track, and in the process, help launch the decades of Porsche success that would follow. In 1988, Porsche revived the Speedster name when it began offering a wide “turbo look” version of the 911 that featured a shortened windscreen and hard, wraparound tonneau.
Then, in 1994, Porsche offered a new Speedster, based on the 964 Carrera 2 platform, while reverting back to the “narrow body configuration.” During its two years of production, only 936 examples were produced, with 427 Speedsters exported to the United States. Originally commissioned by Fred Opert Racing, this is a very special variant of the 964 Speedster in that it is one of just 15 1994 Porsche 911 Speedsters sent to Strosek GmbH in Germany to be modified by aftermarket tuner Vittorio Strosek and converted into a Strosek Mega Speedster.
Finished in Maritime Blue with a custom black and Maritime Blue leather interior, this Mega Speedster is immediately identifiable by its distinctive Strosek-designed widebody with poly-ellipsoid Strosek headlamps molded into the front fenders. In addition to its 3.6L/274 HP flat 6-cylinder engine mated to a 5-speed manual transmission, this unique Speedster benefits from a Strosek-modified independent adjustable suspension system working with three-piece, 17-inch Strosek OZ Racing wheels. Underneath its black soft top, the interior features factory Recaro Pole Position bucket seats finished in black and Maritime Blue, air conditioning, Sony Bluetooth stereo and a Strosek-branded tachometer.
With 5,998 miles showing on the odometer, this rare and impressive Speedster variant comes with a Certificate of Authenticity from Porsche and Strosek.
