Introduced in 1990, the Lamborghini Diablo was a dramatic piece of work. Restyled by Chrysler, which took majority ownership of the company from the Mimran Brothers in 1987, the Diablo was the result of three restyling exercises, the final edition coming from Chrysler studios in Michigan. It’s been said that Marcello Gandini, who designed the Lamborghini Miura and Countach before working on the Diablo, was so upset by the restyled car that he took the original styling concept and turned it into the Cizeta-Moroder V16T.
As if that weren’t dramatic enough, the requirements for the new car called for a huge leap in performance, durability, comfort, drivability and an overall sense of modernity and futurism. Some specifics of the Diablo would be a top speed of at least 196 MPH and the ability to idle in the warmest of weather with the air conditioning on without overheating. The electrical system needed to be comprised of better components, and the clutch pedal needed to be slightly easier to depress. All of the goals were achieved, and early tests with the new 5.7L/485 HP DOHC 48-valve V-12 engine revealed it could top 202 MPH, making it the fastest street-legal production Lamborghini ever built.
The company was also very diligent at improving upon the Diablo with various sub-models and engineering enhancements through the years, one being the all-wheel drive Diablo VT introduced in 1993. This 1995 Diablo VT hails from the estate of Arlen Ness, a famous motorcycle designer, builder and entrepreneur. Showing nearly 44,955 kilometers, the car is finished in red with quad exhaust tips, polished alloy wheels paired with BF Goodrich g-Force T/A tires and a rear wing.
The black leather interior is piped in red and features the signature gated shifter for the 5-speed manual transmission, air conditioning, power windows, a clock, an Alpine AM/FM/CD stereo and instrumentation including a tachometer. Speed is scrubbed off by Brembo 4-wheel disc brakes with black calipers, and the hydraulics for the scissor doors have recently been serviced.
