From its initial inception by designer Marcello Gandini, the Lamborghini Diablo’s aggressive styling has been a subject of controversy. Chrysler took over Lamborghini just after Gandini finalized his design, which the new parent company’s more conservative management immediately handed over to its chief designer Tom Gale. Much to Gandini’s very public chagrin, Gale softened the new model’s shape to better appeal to the powers at Chrysler. It did not blunt the Diablo’s visceral appeal, however, and the line carried through several evolutionary stages, picking up 4-wheel drive, adjustable suspension and a number of other mechanical and cosmetic refinements along the way.
Then in 1998, a new-generation Diablo debuted with reworked styling that included new front and rear fascia, smoother detailing and a fresh new interior. The 2001 Diablo’s 6.0L V-12 engine rose from its original rating of 492 to 550, shaving a full second from its 0-60 MPH time to 3.6 seconds and boosting top speed from 202 to 205 MPH. This stunning 2001 Lamborghini Diablo SE is number 37 of a special edition of 40 produced and one of only 20 in show-stopping effervescent Marrone Eklipsis and is matched inside with Marrone leather.
By 2001, carbon fiber was firmly entrenched as a construction and styling element in automotive design, as can be seen in this Diablo SE’s front splitter, headlight trim, rocker panels and center console. The SE package added more to the Diablo’s already highly exotic mix with a titanium 5-speed shift knob and shift gate, special wide carbon-fiber weave with nickel threading, titanium instrument dial surrounds, Lamborghini brake calipers, magnesium intake manifolds and cam covers, an Alpine infotainment system with navigation, CD changer and amplifier, and power-seat backrests.
