From its founding in 1906, Rolls-Royce Limited labored to build close ties to the North American market, establishing offices in many major cities. As demand increased, Rolls-Royce incorporated Rolls-Royce of America, and purchased a factory in Springfield, Massachusetts, in 1919 to reduce production and delivery times. The Springfield plant immediately began production of the Silver Ghost for American customers, delivering the first American-produced version in 1921. One of the first 50 built was this Seven-Passenger Limousine, chassis number 122JG.
One of 1,703 Silver Ghosts built in America from 1921 to 1926, it has an ownership history that dates back to the original purchaser, a judge in the state of Maine. In recent years it was regularly seen in the HBO original television series Boardwalk Empire, in which it was used to chauffeur the show’s main character, Enoch “Nucky” Thompson. Played by actor Steve Buscemi, the Thompson character was based on real-life Atlantic City prohibition-era power broker Enoch “Nucky” Johnson, who was often seen riding in a Powder Blue Silver Ghost.
Elegantly finished in two-tone Blue and Black with Black wire wheels, it features the brass, nickel and copper accessories that were common to the era, including the famous “Spirit of Ecstasy” radiator ornament. The Rolls’ 453 CI inline-6 engine was rebuilt by one-time owner and respected Rolls-Royce mechanic Frank Cook. This handsome first-generation American Silver Ghost also features a 3-speed transmission, dual side-mount spares, rear jump seats, a roll-up divider window between the driver’s cabin and passenger compartment, Waltham gauges and floor-mounted controls.
