Replacing the long-running and highly successful, but aging, Silver Ghost chassis––the first from Rolls-Royce––was no easy task. However, the New Phantom, which debuted in 1925, was a more than worthy successor. Taking Rolls-Royce into the modern, Roaring ‘20s era of motoring, the Phantom utilized an updated and improved version of the Silver Ghost chassis and reflected the marque’s characteristic design philosophy of careful evolution rather than revolution. Nonetheless, the revisions were sufficient to warrant a new model name.
Initially known as the New Phantom but later retrospectively referred to as the Phantom I, the new Rolls-Royce model featured a new inline 6-cylinder engine based upon an aluminum crankcase with the cylinders cast in three pairs. A one-piece, detachable cylinder head featured a thoroughly modern, pushrod-actuated overhead-valve arrangement. The Phantom I went on to enjoy immense success among Rolls-Royce buyers, with Derby, U.K., production supplemented by the coveted “Springfield” Rolls-Royce Phantom I examples produced across the Atlantic in Massachusetts.
This 1925 Rolls-Royce Phantom from The Pete Todo Collection features an unusual and adventurous convertible coupe body style, finished in gray with black fenders and a distinctively machine-turned finish to the entire hood. A right-hand drive example, characteristic of home market examples, this Phantom is powered by a 7668cc inline 6-cylinder engine paired with a 4-speed manual transmission. A black soft top, red upholstery, red carpeting and wood interior trim combine to uphold the aged but steadfastly robust character of this fascinating Phantom.
Along with dual side-mount spare tires with Rolls-Royce-scripted mirrors, black wire wheels and a rear luggage rack and trunk, numerous period accessories are found on this engaging Rolls-Royce, including a mix of instruments comprising a Cambridge temperature gauge, Dewrance oil gauge and Weston ammeter. The famed Rolls-Royce Spirit of Ecstasy mascot graces the radiator of this 100-year-old Rolls-Royce legend, which now boldly enters its second century of existence.
