Penned by Giorgetto Giugiaro, the Ghibli is considered by many to be one of Maserati and Ghia’s most groundbreaking designs. Named after a hot, dry wind in the Sahara, the Ghibli was an expensive car when new, commanding a list price of $19,000. Nevertheless, buyers threw caution to the wind once they saw the Ghibli in the flesh, and 1,170 coupes and 125 spyders were produced by the end of production in 1973. The Ghibli quickly proved to be a wonderful grand-touring car, perfect for high-speed jaunts across countries or continents.
Fitted with a 4.7-liter DOHC V-8 with dry-sump lubrication and two chain-driven camshafts per cylinder bank, the Ghibli’s engine certainly lived up to its gorgeous bodywork. Capable of producing 330 horsepower, it could reach 60 mph from a standing start in a quick 6.8 seconds, leading to a top speed of 154 mph. Ghiblis could be had with either a five-speed ZF manual transmission or a three-speed Borg-Warner automatic.
While not much is known about the car’s early history, it is said to retain its matching-numbers engine and original five-speed manual transmission. Following a restoration by Bob Smith Coachworks in Gainesville, Texas, in 2000, the car remains in excellent condition to this day, clearly having been well maintained and preserved ever since. Fitted with a Blaupunkt radio with modern Pioneer speakers, the car is finished in a fetching color combination of black over a light grey interior, which was applied during its restoration. Its consignor notes that it is an absolute joy to drive and would certainly please the most discerning of collectors.
