As Maserati’s first road model to be produced in any serious numbers, the 3500 GT was developed by legendary Italian engineer Giulio Alfieri and set the standard for a long line of fast, handsomely styled and luxuriously appointed Maserati GT models produced throughout the 1960s, ‘70s and beyond. Powering the 3500 GT was a potent DOHC “twin plug” 6-cylinder engine designated Tipo 101 and directly derived from the 350S sports racers of the era. The car featured a coil-sprung, double-wishbone independent front suspension, including an anti-roll bar, and a live rear axle located by leaf springs with hydraulic shock absorbers, an anti-roll bar and a longitudinal torque arm.

Two handsome body styles were offered on the 3500 GT chassis, comprising the Spider by Vignale, plus the Superleggera (super light) Coupe by Carrozzeria Touring––both penned by Giovanni Michelotti. Interiors were handsomely appointed with Connolly leather upholstery and equipped with useful instrumentation, while a spacious luggage compartment proved useful on long-range, high-speed transcontinental jaunts. According to published sources, as few as 2,223 examples of the 3500 GT were built in all, from 1958 through 1964. This blue 1960 Maserati 3500 GT features that aforementioned coachwork by Carrozzeria and is the product of a comprehensive restoration.

Power is provided by the Tipo 101 3.5L inline 6-cylinder engine, with induction via triple Weber twin-choke side draft carburetors, paired with a ZF 5-speed manual gearbox and backed by Girling front disc brakes. The interior is well appointed, with dual fender-mounted mirrors, Jaeger instruments, an in-dash clock, a passenger-side grab handle and a pushbutton AM/FM radio. In addition to Maserati’s signature Trident grille motif, this early-production 3500 GT is completed by a set of ventilated steel wheels mounting bright hubcaps and trim rings.
